Rumble in the Urban Jungle

i have a 03 cupra, i noticed a humming noise from the rear,, so had the wheel bearing changed by a local garage, the noise was still there after thou!!, they then put two new tyres on the back, problem solved!!............ well for a couple of thousand miles, until the noise came back, the garage told me that it was a tyre fault, but i was not so sure, so i went to my local tyre depot (selecta tyre) and asked their opinion, they said it sounds more like a suspension problem, they showed me how the tyre has stepped, as you could feel it on your hand if you put your hand on the tread and rotated the tyre.
so, now i dont know what to do..., anybody know exactly what the suspension problem is!!??

I had exactly the same problem with the tyres, they were kind of stepped, but i've had them all changed which got rid of the hum from 40mph but not the grinding/loud tyre noise when i'm turning or bracking, i can even feel it in the brake pedal. I was thing suspension but only because i'm running out of ideas.

To recap, its not tyres or bearings thats the problem. Come on people, lets get this solved!

well i deffo think its suspension probs.. as i had vredestein fitted on the front and back, and it was only the rear near side that has stepped..
the other tyre on the off side seemed ok!!.

the stepped tyre ends up with high and low points all the way round, and this is causing the noise.,..

But what is causing the problem?

Mine has just started with a similar problem and is going up on the lift tonight, getting my new wheels and tyres fitted at same time . My mate who's a mechanic has seen similar on a Mk.4 Golf they had in which I drove to see if same fault and on this it turned out to be some of the bushes had perished so they were replaced with Pro-flex ones and the noise had gone although the lad who owned the car asked them to change the bearings on both sides as well as the car had done 100k and he wanted piece of mind.

Mines done 135k so I may change the bearings as well for piece of mind, but will know better tonight.

Just got back from the garage and have found my rumble is the steering rack tie rod so I've got a new one on order.

Well its still at the dealership, after a week of it sitting there they told me its the tyres, live with it. I was not happy with this and got Seat UK involved. They are now looking at it again!

Ive just got my car (LCR '05) back after it being at the dealers since last wednesday to investigate my wheel noise which is still there even after replacing the GSD3's (which has 50p wear which they attributed to the noise) with Falken 452's and still getting some noise. Theyve had a good look at it and I think there was a bulletin on gearbox bearings. They can still hear a noise and are still unsure as to what it is...so they have refurbished the gearbox and changed the bearings in there....they werent 100% this was the noise but as they couldnt explain it...they did it under warranty. Just got the car back this morning...will post back later w.r.t the noise.....interesting though that the new tyres are starting to wear strangely like the GSD3's. Theyve had the shocks off and tests and looked at just about everything else...couldnt find fault with them...although they say its possible its the shocks but they cant replace under warranty unless they can be shown as faulty...which they arent currently....

Just got back from the garage and have found my rumble is the steering rack tie rod so I've got a new one on order.

Ok I've now changed the tie rod and track rod end, Suspension front top mounts, and passenger side wheel bearing, and the noise/vibration has come back again each time I change something it goes away for a short time then comes back.
This weekend I am getting the wheels re-balanced and a 4 wheel alignment done.
Next week I am replacing the engine and gearbox mounts as they have quite a bit of excess movement in them and also fitting a pro-flex bush to the dog bone mount. If this doesn't work then it will be either ARB drop links and bushes (Is a 23mm Front ARB standard or aftermarket?) or CV joints or both next.

I am eventually replacing all the bushes with pro-flex ones as they are a little tired after 140000 miles.

I have also been told to check the exhaust downpipe as the flexi pipe part sometimes stiffens up with age has anyone else had this happen.

Any other advice is appreciated as usual.

Sidlow have told me they are 100% sure its the tyres, after changing the wheels to test they said the noise was gone, now i just need to fight to have them change the tyres and see for myself, somehow i don't believe them but only time will tell. I've been without my car for almost 2 weeks now and can't wait to get it back.
