I had my 57 plate FR TDI serviced last weekend and all seemed well until I did some motorway miles yesterday. When I went above 80mph there was a rattling coming from the engine bay. When I checked this morning I noticed that the engine cover had not been clipped into place in the front left corner. Problem now is, when I have tried to clip back into place, there is a rip in the rubber recepticle (not sure if right name!) which means that I can't get it to clip back into place.

I'm thinking of taking both parts of the engine cover off and keeping in the shed, although wondered if there is anything that the engine cover does in addition to just making it look nicer which I should be aware of (i.e. sound proofing)? Has anyone else taken theirs off?

I just can't be bothered to try and take the car back to the dealer when it is easier to just take the whole thing off. It's so frustrating when you don't get the car back the same as you left it! Comments much appreciated...

will be a clip broken, i beleive the cover is only there for aesthetics, so can be removed if you don't want it.

Not convinced the rattle is being caused by the cover though to be honest.

99% sure it's the cover. I changed my number plate and thought it was that on the way up to Manchester, so tightended screws and put some industrial strength tape behind plate yet it still made noise! When I lifted the bonnet and pulled at the cover it was clearly flapping around. Not sure what else it could be either.

Going to remove cover and go on motorway tomorrow morning so that will be the true test...!

Had exact same prob with mine after service!!!!!! went back to garage and they have ordered me some new rubber push clips so will fit them myself since they seem not to be able to manage it?? Dealers my ****

Turns out Tam was right. Have removed engine cover with it's two broken clips and went above 80 last night and there is still some rattling from under the bonnet. How annoying. I now have an engine cover which is broken and a rattle which I can't find...

Will check the air intake box like Jace said.

Thanks for replies...

Its more than likely the reason that all new seats come without engine covers, eccept for TDI FRs and those with the air filter intergrated i.e. TFSI/FSIs

If you havent tried it yet have a go at removing the engine cover on a TFSI - they can be a right bugger.

My engine cover has also come off as well - getting it done under warranty but worrying when it also dislodges the dip stick.....

I have the same problem.

After a bit of "investigation" I've found it's some sort of flap of plastic underneath the engine bay has come loose and is flapping around and making a rattling noise at 80+ mph so going to take it in to get it sorted this week!

Got sick of my engine cover coming off so it now lives in the garage. When the lease finishes it will be re-fitted in the boot :)

Im almost there - everytime i open the bonnet the bloody thing is hanging off.

God how strange. Wondered why my car stank of oil. Opened up the bonnet to find the cover had poped off and pushed dipstick out. There was a bad burning oil smell. " clips have broke, but engine cover now lives in boot of car. Dip stick now in and everything back to normal. :)
