lame, it still does exactly the same thing now and again when reversing on full lock.. what could it be?!

Could be the clutch on the alternator pulley. Ive had same problems and fitted new tensioner and belt which solves it for a while but then the noise comes back. Been told its a common problem so ordered a new one today. I will post back once ive fitted it and hopefully sorted it.

What have you had replaced?
tensioner and belt

that'd be great, cheers

Problem solved. It was the pulley. I took the alternator off and took it to a specialist because a vw tool is needed. £5 later all sorted.

yeh i thought it was. it looked a bit wobbly and loose.
****ing annoying that they didn't change it when everything was changed though.. means more money thrown away on dealer work rates. grr

have you got a pic of it btw? which pulley is it?

Yes, please post a pic of the offending part!
I had the plastic cap of the top wheel on the main belt as it had been usggested that it may be messy inside. However all was clean and tidy. Suspect i was looking in the wrong place!

Congrats on getting yours sorted though! Bet its a LOT nicer to drive in now! :D

They look like this

yeh, i thought it was that. which one did you replace? the top one? mine's all clean too, but you can see it vibrating loads when under stress.. probably got loose while driving on the knackered damper

i'll get it done in the summer, cba to faff about with it now. my local garage out here in norway doesn't have the tool anyway, so **** it

bit miffed that they had the whole thing out but they didn't replace it, but oh well :p

Thats what i was looking at too! Thanks for the pic!

I didnt have the engine running after i had the cap off so i will do tomorrow and have a look and see whats what. Its the single most annoying motor experience todate but it seems theres light at the end of the tunnel!

Can you confirm that the problem is still not recurring after the pulley change?

If so, im booking mine in ASAP

Also on a side note, how much was it to get fixed if you dont mind me asking? ;)

mine's booked for tomorrow. will report back on thursday..

car appears to be 100% now.

changed the tensioner, pulley and belt. job done (eventually)
it was originally the tensioner, but i drove on it for a few hundred miles, which in turn knackered the pulley, when i just changed. had i left it any longer, the tensioner probably would have needed changing again..

unfortunately what turned out to be a bit of work at the dealer for this, turned out to cost me over £500 as the intake pipes blew off at both ends and the boot solenoid packed up too :(
