frozen lock/door seals!

Glad it is not just me then. Thought I had broken something!!

The other night I moved my car at work at about 6pm and the door was fine. Then come end of play at 10pm it just wouldn't shut. Monday night I thought it was something to do with the handle as it quickly rectified itself. But on Wednesday it took me 10 minutes! I actually started to drive off and just as i did the thing locked again. Very strange. Been using the passenger door when I get home as don't want to wake all the neighbours with my frustrations with the door lock.

I smeared Vaseline on the door seals which has helped that problem but i do get water build up at the bottom of the drivers door when it rains. Think it must just be the age of the seals.
 
it was 6am and i had a long trip ahead of me. i was lucky the person behind the counter had hot water for me to pour over the cap else i would have NOT been a happy chappy at all :sleepy:
 
Found out tonight that it's not just leons. A guy at work has an A6 that the door lock was staying open on. He had found out a neat trick. He heated the key with a lighter and stuck it in the lock for a while which freed it up.

Makes me think I wonder if you can still get them battery powered heated keys?

Yes you can still get the battery heated keys.

But please, whatever you do,DON'T TRY HEATING THE CAR KEY UP IN AN ATTEMPT TO DEFROST THE LOCK!!!!!!!!. When a heated key goes into a frozen lock, not only does it risk breaking the lock mechanism from it expanding too quick, there's a real risk that you'll snap the key off inthe lock. Happened to me a few years ago on an Astra, and cost me a new lock and key.

Yep, that's a good shout. Don't want the extra expense of having to replace a lock. I think slow heating is the thing here. Plus I would prefer to use my key for starting the engine and getting me home rather than hanging out of the drivers door.
 
Once the lock is SLOWLY thawed out ( even parking it in winter sun for half an hour should do it) take out the black rubber grommet that you'll see on the edge of the door near the lock, and SOAK the lock with WD40. This should prevent it re-freezing. DOn't use de-icer, as even that freezes at low temperatures, and once that's frozen, it will take even longer to defrost again!

And whilst I'm on, please don't do what the silly mare next door has just done in the last half hour. She's tried to defrost her back window of a 59 plate Saab with HOT water, and is now waiting for Autoglass to come out to replace the glass!!!!!!!!!!! And they joke about being blonde.................

What a job, shifting not only a load of ice and snow, but a boot full of broken glass as well!!

You have to do couple of trics to keep your Leon door's in good shape whole winter.

1. Use silicon oil or Würth 0890 110 Rubber Care Spray for your rubber door sealings. You have to use a lot of those because rubber suck a lot of those inside. When you do that 1-2 times in winter, door sealings dosn't freeze in any weather. Those products are also treat rubber and keep it in good condition long time.

2. Lubricate whole door lock mechanism with synthetic motor oil. You can disassemly door lock chamber to get oil for ewery necessary parts.

3. Use CRC 5-56 or similar thin oil to lubricate your lock chamber. You can use lock chamber to unlock your door's if remote control dosn't open your door's in cold.

4. When you wash your car, tape the lower sealing of driver door glass, lock chamber and gap's in the door handle. When you do that you can prevent that water dosn't go inside of the door. When you do that, water dosn't freeze your door lock mechanism.

5. Use hi rev's in the indoor heater while driving. That remove moisture from inside of the door lock mechanism.

Try to understand what I mean. My english isn't perfect.

By the way. Couple of days ago there was -30,5 Celsius when I was driving to home and there was no any problem in my car. I only have a thin shirt and heater was kept temperature in good level all the time. I can say that Leon is a warm car. My old car (Nissan Almera -98) was wery much colder.
 
arrggghhhhh got another problem now, managed to release the fuel cap last night but now the pin hasn't popped back out to close it!

any suggestions on how to get it out lol!?

Not sure exactly how it operates. It sounds more like a solenoid/ relay than a cable when opening. Perhapes that has seized. Is there a fuse associated with the release? (Check the handbook)

I had a look on EuroCarParts but couldn't find anything related.

I would visit a Seat garage and have a look at the parts drawing for the mechanism and see if that sheds any light on it.

no worries thanks for the reply, i remember it doing it about a yr or so again and it just started working again, and has been fine ever since (so forgot about it) now its back and is more of an annoyance now...maybe gve it a few more days to warm up lol!
 
iv had the same priblem with the seals and the lock. the seals actually came off so i had to get new 1s, they have been fine since but i will keep lubricating them with silicone. but i still have the problem with the lock, gona try lubricating the locking mechanism 2moz and see how that goes. i work for nissan and some customers have had the same problem with their nissans and nissan have just replaced the door lock as water gets into it and freezes so if lubricating it doesnt work i will try replacing the lock
