Nope as thats the Semi-Synth mate from memory? - Silver bottle?
I use FUCHS Titan GT1 5W 40 Fully Syth... £28+VAT for 5 L in GSF![]()
I use Quantum Platinum 5w40.. which is fully sythetic, its what they stock at VW/ SEAT so its all the engine needs... £20 for 5l!![]()
what had it done to the engine and what was required to fix it?
A well belated reply I know (sorry!). But it had blocked the oil separator which in turn had caused excess oil to run through the inlet system, which had then turned to thick sludge in the EGR, inlet manifold, cylinder head ports and the back of valves! Had to clean head ports, back of valves (head removed) and EGR including lapping in inlet valves, replacing exhaust valves and replacing inlet mani cause it just wouldn't clean up!
higher number doesn't mean better oil or that one supersede the other - this case 505.00 do not supersede 504.00 as 505.00 was originally designed for diesel engines, and 504.00 for petrol engines. 505.00 came out in 1992 and 504.00 in 2003 (I think)VW oils are indeed backwards compatible, so the Mobil 1 0w/40 is VW505.00 approved, which means its backwards compatible with VW504.00 (LCR calls for 504.00/507.00
the best oils to get for VW petrol engines are:
- Castrol Egde 5w-30 (504.00/507.00)
- Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5w-30 (504.00/507.00)
How are these better than others?
since years now Castrol is working close together with VW engine development. they have huge databank behind them to work with. this gives an advantage other (smaller) oil companies can not cope with. How are these better than others?

and mobil 1 because they proved to be good, check the bobistheoilguy forums
wasn't it these forums that said regular Castrol synthetics (not Edge) are a scam - heavily refined and modified mineral oils? Edge being just a regular decent synth?
yeah, Castrol is one of the companies that sells GTL group III based oils (basically mineral based oil) heavily refined as a "synthetic"
they are bit tricky, they don't name those as "full-synthetic" just "synthetic-based" or something similar.
the Edge 5w-30 however is a true group IV based fullsyn oil.
here in europe it is harder to call something synthetic, in the US there is no law what can be called synthetic - the mentioned forum is mostly us-based
nope, and never worked for themDo you work for Castrol by any chance?
nope, and never worked for them
I am in the bicycle industry
im going to change my oil at the weekend gonna buy 5l of millers 5W-30 Xf fully synthetic oil for my LCR , last time i bought some cheap multivalve oil not realizing that decent oil are to be had with these engines.
