yes but 2x2L is not enough for a full change, so it's 3x2L, that is unless you find someone to share the cost of the extra can :D

Nope as thats the Semi-Synth mate from memory? - Silver bottle?

I use FUCHS Titan GT1 5W 40 Fully Syth... £28+VAT for 5 L in GSF :)

I use Quantum Platinum 5w40.. which is fully sythetic, its what they stock at VW/ SEAT so its all the engine needs... £20 for 5l! :D

I normally use 5w30 castrol edge fully synthetic oil.

Last oil change use semi sythetic oil.

Just had an oil change and the guy used 5w40.

What is the correct oil for the lcr mk1, 5w30 or 5w40?

Also the oil i used for the oil change was Carlube Engine Oil (Triple R 5W40 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil from recommended by euro car parts.

what had it done to the engine and what was required to fix it?

A well belated reply I know (sorry!). But it had blocked the oil separator which in turn had caused excess oil to run through the inlet system, which had then turned to thick sludge in the EGR, inlet manifold, cylinder head ports and the back of valves! Had to clean head ports, back of valves (head removed) and EGR including lapping in inlet valves, replacing exhaust valves and replacing inlet mani cause it just wouldn't clean up!

I use Millers CFS 5w40 Fully Synth, I change every 3000 or so miles and after using Castrol Edge and Titan Supersyn of the same grade, i have noticed that the millers seems not to dirty up as quick as the Castrol or Titan stuff, it has better qualitys for spirited driving too, lets face it with our leons we are all prown to a bit of that, Oil quality is paramount on a turbo car thats why i take the time to do it regular, its worth it in my book.

Wow that was a belated reply lol.
That's actually quite a common fault which also occurs with the correct oil. It's because of the change to cyclone type oil separators rather than the filter ones, the cyclones pass too much oil which as you know goes straight into the air intake system and causes the problems you describe.

VW oils are indeed backwards compatible, so the Mobil 1 0w/40 is VW505.00 approved, which means its backwards compatible with VW504.00 (LCR calls for 504.00/507.00
higher number doesn't mean better oil or that one supersede the other - this case 505.00 do not supersede 504.00 as 505.00 was originally designed for diesel engines, and 504.00 for petrol engines. 505.00 came out in 1992 and 504.00 in 2003 (I think)
fortunately oils that meet 504.00 they also meet 507.00 which is the latest requirements for diesel.
the 504.00/507.00 oils supersede almost all of the previous oil requirements of VW

the best oils to get for VW petrol engines are:
- Castrol Egde 5w-30 (504.00/507.00)
- Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5w-30 (504.00/507.00)

How are these better than others?

hearsay ;)

Eg. all my local friends/forums/tuners say "use Motul 5W40" so I'm running 8100 X-Cess. I didn't do any chemical tests, just trusted their opinions.
The visible (audible?) difference is my engine stopped tapping. I used to run Motul 300V Power which was over the top for my daily driving.

I'm actually due an oil change in a few weeks, I'll let you know how 8100 performs after an engine flush.

since years now Castrol is working close together with VW engine development. they have huge databank behind them to work with. this gives an advantage other (smaller) oil companies can not cope with.
and mobil 1 because they proved to be good, check the bobistheoilguy forums
they are true synthetic oils (beware, there are different standards in the US and Europe, you can find the Mobil 1 ESP Formula somewhere else also as a semi-synthetic oil too) bit thinner than the castrol otherwise almost equally good. it uses a group IV base oil not a GTL group III which are also called synthetic (in the US) so if you are buying something off ebay please look what you pay for.

I switch between Castrol Edge FS & Mobil 1 FS every 5000 miles depending on which one is cheaper at the time. I wouldn't discount Millers though as I hear good things but I think all of the top brands are much of a muchness. Basically I am happy with anything that does it's job and protects the engine as much as it can, especially on a tune engine running at higher RPMs.

wasn't it these forums that said regular Castrol synthetics (not Edge) are a scam - heavily refined and modified mineral oils? Edge being just a regular decent synth?

yeah, Castrol is one of the companies that sells GTL group III based oils (basically mineral based oil) heavily refined as a "synthetic"
they are bit tricky, they don't name those as "full-synthetic" just "synthetic-based" or something similar.
the Edge 5w-30 however is a true group IV based fullsyn oil.
here in europe it is harder to call something synthetic, in the US there is no law what can be called synthetic - the mentioned forum is mostly us-based

Good choice! Or go for a 5w40 if you do track days with extra BHP.
