Opened my car this morning, sat in the seat, shut the door and bang, the rear window shattered.

Rang seat customer care who were obnoxious and said it wasn't there problem.

Called the dealer and he said he'd have to try to get them to make a goodwill payment as it was out of warranty.

Surely this is a pretty major issue, the screen wasn't frozen and had no chips or anything in it and for it to just shatter is ridiculous. Anyone else have this happen and did seat respond?

thanks
Paul

How old is the car?

Is it just out of warranty, or has it been out for a while..

The rear window as in the boot window? I've heard of these shattering on any car when the hatch has been shut under a bit of strain, like being pushed down from one side and not the center.

Not something that should happen though!

Same has recently happened to my mate in his Fabia MK1. Went through 2 rear windows in 2 weeks during the recent cold spells. When autoglass came to change it the second time, they tried to blame the car electrics.

You might be able to get the window replaced under your car windscreen insurance, even though it is the back window and not a "windscreen", if you are getting no joy from SEAT.

I broke mine some years ago, on another car make, but it was replaced by AUTOGLASS with no hassle and my insurers treated it the same as a broken front windscreen.

Rear windows on tailgates get a lot of stress from opening/closing so can shatter just from the glass becoming weker over time so it is not that unusual.

No effect on any no claims bonus either!

Thanks, I'll look into it

I've just had exactly the same happen. In fact nobody was near the car. Yesterday (frosty), the car was parked in our car park at work and the rear window just disintigrated. Someone about 100m heard it and saw the glass go everywhere. Insurers have sorted it, and new one is just setting now! still a pain, and would be interested if any one else has seen this?

Common problem with VAG hatches im afraid, seen this happen on an 02 polo, MK4 ibizas are common for it and skoda fabias.
Seems to only haplen when its cold or maybe its just more common when its cold?
It must be something to do with the temperature change within the glass.
