Cupra TDi question?

Hey guys,

I may be in the market for a diesel pretty soon, as my big engined BM is rather expensive to run for my 60 mile a day commute!

The thing is, I don't want to something so dull I'll hate the actual drive, so it's gotta be as close the driving experience as possible to my 328 [and Integra before that] - as in: 'some' performance, sporty handling etc.

One car I think might fit the bill is the Ibiza Cupra TDi, especially as it has the most power of all the 1.9 TDi VAG cars. It seems to be quite a rare car though, am I right? Looking on PistonHeads and Auto Trader, the selection isn't huge! I reckon I'll have about £6.5k to spend on it, and to minimize the need to replace worn items, I'm hoping for a car with under 50k on the clock...is this doable?

Of course, there are a lot of 130 FR's about, how do the 2 compare, especially in the overtaking stakes?

Yeah that's easily doable IMO. That price sounds about right for a 06-07 plate, im looking to shift mine soon due to a kiddie on the way and need 5 doors, mines an 56' with 49,000 on the clock and I'll be after around 6k

As far as I know the cupra is the mich better option if only for the extra beans, 312mm brake set up, FMIC etc so you will feel much less of a step down from your BM power wise

That's what I figured. I bet the Cupra will punch up and down the motorway with pretty much the same vigour as my BM, which isn't a rocket ship to begin with!

I'm not sure the 130 TDi cars [vRS, Polo GT, FR, Golf 4] will have enough?

PD130 remap safely to 170bhp, plenty of clout there. Still return 50+mpg. Cupra remap to about 190bhp 300 ib/ft, your BM wouldn't live with that on a B road . Integra is a good handling car, LSD, independant rear suspension etc.

If i wanted a reasonably quick car that is fairly comfy, then the FR is better option perhap.

Why do you say that? I was thinking of changing my pd130 Sport for a Cupra 160?

Also I'm struggling to find a low mileage example for that money there's an 07 plate local to me with 46,000 miles but they want £8k - I was thinking thats a bit much?

Yes the Teg was mega, I loooooooooooooooved it. Just not so good for a motorway commute!

Reading the links i posted i gather that the 130 Fr and 160 Cupra run the same block and internals its just the Cupra is mapped different and the FMIC, AP Racing brakes etc

I think I'd go for the Cupra given the choice as insurance isn't an issue at my age and out of the box it's more of the complete package. Like Chris says though, £6.5k might not get a low-miler and the classifieds aren't exactly choc-a-bloc with TDi Cupra's?

Alfa 147, good looking, but it's an old design now, and i don't care who owns alfa now, it will go wrong at some point. 147 ducati corse with the Q2 Diff, very nice car, 170bhp commonrail unit. Very nice cars.


FR is comfier than the cupra, cheaper to insure, they get better mpg due to the cupra having a shorter ratio gearbox, less turbo lag etc.

Give you an idea on speed on a remapped cupra tdi, me chasing my mates 220bhp type r round Llandow circuit. Lacks straightline speed, but not in gear mid range firepower. AP 4 pots are also much better than the single shots on most small hot hatches.

Not really, still goes like wounded rat low down, just doesnt pick up as fast as the FR.

yeah true, but when it does pick up its amazing! a couple of times i've been slow off the lights only to fly way by the cocky type R driver a few seconds later

Yeah the 170 Q2 147 is a very nice car but one of them will be well over my budget! It appears the Alfa GT [pretty much a 147] might just be doable for £6.5 - 7k too - such a sexy car!

Like you mention though, can an Alfa be reliable?!?

Think it's same chassis as 147, but so much better looking, real stunning car. 170 bhp with the Q2 diff would be a good car.

But i would not trust the reliability, Alfa dealers are notoriously poor and there are few alfa specialists, good thing with a SEAT, they are fairly reliable and there are loads of VAG specialists.

However... 3.2 v6 Q2 diff. If only fuel was half the price it is now

my mates 325 couldnt live with my standard fr on b roads, now its remapped it upsets a lot of faster cars in the lanes and thats before i fit a rarb this weekend lol
