CR170 Stutters Too?

Hi all,

I've seen loads of threads about stutter under light throttle on the PD170, but I've now experienced similar with my Common Rail FR.

I've had this 3 times now, car not fully warm, but not cold (reading around 70 deg C) in a queue of traffic, crawling in first gear, around 1500rpm and it feels like I'm coming off the throttle, then back on, then off etc. It stops as soon as I boot it, or come of the throttle.

Other than the above the car runs fine, it's had its 20k service around 2k miles ago.

Has anyone else had similar with theirs?

My CR never stutted a little tardy off boost but power delivery was always linear and smooth.
 
So I guess it's just me then.

Since first posting, the problem has become worse. On my drive to work this morning, it was stuttering loads (always at low revs in low gears, under light throttle), I'd say the car on the whole feels a little hesitant, and it could be my active imagination but it feels down on power too.

Anyway, it's booked in at the stealers tomorrow, we'll see what they can find. So fingers crossed it's playing up tomorrow as well!
 
I've had the same stuttering as you describe, in a queue, when the engine is not fully warm, although it hasn't happened in the last few months. Now instead it chatters (diesel knock?) sometimes when accelerating 1400 - 1700 rpm. All is well once up to temperature. 20k service in a couple of weeks so will get it checked then.
 
Rather annoyingly mine was as good as gold coming home from work. Fingers crossed it'll perform again tomorrow.
 
Well, took it to the garage this morning and it stuttered a couple of times on the way, but unfortunately it wouldn't perform for the mechanics. They scanned for errors, but didn't find anything. However. They've updated the software to the latest version, and one of the reported fixes is related to the EGR value function. The car was fine on the drive home, but the real test will be tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed
 
I've had it too. IIRC three times in the last 5 months/ 7,000 miles. It happens so rarely for only a few minutes that I'm going to look like a moaner if I mention it on the first service.
 
cr170 fine here too..........only "stutter" is the sudden kick of the turbo kicking in.....still catches me out occasionally.....lol

then get ear ache off the missus for the next mile or two....mmmmm
 
My PD140 does this also, cold, light throttle, in the previously stated 1400-1700 range. Answers to my thread on here said to clean the EGR valve and possibly change the fuel filter, which should fix it, though I've yet to get round to it :whistle:

Floor it (warm ofc) and she flies though :D

The DSG is the saving grace for me - saves people from saying I have crap clutch control when the stutter occurs :D
 
PD140 and PD170 Both do it!

Strange thing is.... if trying to drive it gently it does it

However... ive done about 30 or 40 1/4 Mile runs now and it hasnt once stuttered when doing them so Hard driving doesnt cause it


It also hasnt stuttered since i removed my EGR
 
Well, can't say for definite that it's fixed yet, but I had a stutter free drive to work so that's a good sign. I'm wondering if they updated the software at it's last service (June) and introduced the fault, and this subsequent update fixes it. Might explain why I've only had it stutter since it's last service and why only a few people have experienced it.
 
ive always said the EGR is whats causing the stuttering on the PD170 engine and probably the PD140 Engine aswell, The Seat Sport Spain PD170 Engines used in WTCC and BTCC dont have a EGR either so that tells you something.Mines been fine since i removed my EGR

Im not sure about the new CR170 Engines used recently in WTCC but i bet they dont have the EGR Either

I believe I'm right in saying that the EGR function is purely to clean up the emissions and actually has a negative effect on the performance / economy. It's designed to open up under low loading allowing some nasties to be burned of, but should close when being asked for the beans to allow the engine to have the most oxygen and cool air as possible.

Makes sense that they're remove it / permanently close it for touring cars.
 
I think I may have spoken too soon. Today whilst driving up a slight incline probably in 3rd around 2.5k rpm, not giving it too many beans (heavily pregnant wife in the car!) The car went into limp mode for the first time ever. Coil light was flashing. Turned engine off, then back on no light and the car seems normal. I'm wondering if it might be sticky turbo vanes?
