cv joint removal??

the car has just failed its test on a split cv boot. so, to save some dollar. im doing this myself. i just cant seem to get the cv joint off the driveshaft to replace the gaiter.it says in the haynes manual to tap it off with a mallet which ive been trying to do but with no sucess am i missing something out or is it really just a ******* to do
any help on this would me greatly appreciated.
cars a 1.2 if it matters.

That should be correct, but sometimes takes a bit more than a tap

i dont want to hit it too hard though as i dont want to nacker the joint & have to replace that too.

Make sure the cv.is straight when yoir hitting it if u know what I mean

i get ya, but it moves when you hit it anyway although i have been trying to hold it still

Are you trying to do it with the driveshaft still attached to the box?

nah, the shaft aint on the car.

I've done both sides on mine, on one side the cv joint literally fell off, on the other I had to seriously belt 7 bells out of it with a lump hammer and drift with the shaft in a vice.
Its down to how obstinate the circlip wants to be.

its all done now. when i got up this morning i just thought, 'right ya b******! you aint gettin the better of me! went out in the garage, got it in the vice & 2 good blows with a big hammer & it was off
