pd150 turbo- recon or replacement?

Put my foot down earlier and all of a sudden there was a puff of black from the rear and then a MASSIVELY loud wooshing noise on full boost and it was down on power. (no boost leaks before anyone says that..) with the 'siren' noise behind it and it's now boosting on any throttle, not jsut 2k upwards like usual.

Took it to a local VAG specialist and they confirmed the turbo's gone.

I've done a quick read up and read that apparently most companies can't ever recon the VNT units properly for some reason? I think it was something to do with lining something up or synchronising something? Not sure..

Either way, the local garage said they would charge about £380+vat for a recon unit a company called 'Turbo Solutions'. plus about 4 hours labour, so another £200 odd.

A new genuine garrett one is £720 from darkside developments...is it worth jsut getting a new one?

The way i thought it earlier is that if it IS possible to recondition these turbos properly then the cheaper solution would obviously be better.
On the other hand, or if they can't be done properly, I can buy a new one and pay the extra for it, then keep my old unit and when money allows it, that can be sent off for hybrid treatment in the future?

What's the best solution guys?

Stage 1 hybrid pd150 from turbo dynamics will take your old unit in exchange. Good for 210bhp

I always try to uprate

How does their surcharge system work? I saw a hybrid that is up for a surcharge offer by sending mine back, but under their terms and conditions it says-

New or Reconditioned Exchange Turbochargers
To be acceptable for exchange all old units must conform to the following specifications:
1. Be complete and in "off-engine" condition;
2. Be the same Part Number as the unit supplied;
3. Rotor assemblies must not be broken or seized.

How do i know if the rotor assemblies are broke or seized? Id love a hybrid one and i've seen one on there that's the same price as a brand new garrett one and it says you can use the £120 surcharge service...but is that refunded to you from the price there already, or is that price shown already including the surcharge?

Is there any point uprating up to a stage 1 turbo for 10hp? Might aswell go to stage 2 for a possible 260 but then you'd need clutch and injectors, and I wouldn't personally do it unless I had different rods and pistons, and a very healthy cam....

Yeah only thing i'm concerned about with going straight up to a stage 2 hybrid is that I can only JUST afford that if i cut back loads on my finances this month...i don't want my clutch to go boom straight away haha, I'm guessing i don't need a remap straight away with a hybrid? obviously it would be better to...btu do i need to straight away?

Actually I really can't budget to get the hybrid :( I'd love to but the price it costs for the turbo on it's own is what it could cost me to get a recon unit and get it fitted

If you map a pd130 turbo you will get not far off that! Pointless to me

yeah maybe but the turbo is on its way out anyway and the pd150 is a bit stronger built so id prefer the stronger one to cope with higher boost pressure ect ect is it a KO3S??

Right, screw it, out comes the credit card ;)

If I buy this http://www.turbodynamics.co.uk/shop...urbo-stage-2-for-vag-19tdi-150bhp-p-4044.html
Would I need it mapped straight away when it's fitted? or would it be alright to drive for a couple of weeks?

This is pointless, I'm sure the injectors limit it to 230 anyway, so you'd be paying that for half the potential gain, and with even 230 your clutch will slip! Mine is 180 at the mo, 280 ft/lb and it doesn't slip but the clutch is 10000 miles old.... I'm just going to get a recon pd150 unit, and save the money.

No no dont be daft!

Dont listen to them on here! Jabbasport have proven stock injectors at 260bhp

The pd engine internals are fine upto 300bhp

And you can run your car on the standard map without issue on the hybrid 150 until you get an uprated clutch (which is all you need) the you can map upto 230/240bhp

And trust me they fly!

Honestly theres a lad over on briskoda called boss fox. He has a big turbo build fabia vrs from jabba on stock nozzles, been dyno'd on a fair few rr's at 260+

End of safe injection window on stock injectors is about 190-200hp.

You would have to add another 30!!!% of duration to reach 260hp.

Which would end up at way over 40 degrees duration = turbo barbeque party.....

Just yesterday I have seen a so called "pro" tuning file claimed to make 256hp on dyno.

Besides from the mistakes in the tuning file, it makes about 220hp with extreme high risk of quick engine damage.

I have not yet seen any tuned PD 130/150 which even cale close to the claimed numbers in real world.

Dynos are easy to manipulate in either direction, but I guess these "I made xxx (impossible) hp with stock this and that hardware" will never end......
