Mk3 184 fr handling

Hi guys

I have recently upgraded to an fr184 from an fr+ 170, took it for its first proper run on some local country lanes and it felt quite wallowy and didn't give me confidence to hit the bends as I would have done in my
mk2 fr+.

I have put 2 new tyres on the front ( uniroyal rainsport 3) could it be due to that?

Has anyone else experienced this? Some feedback would be great as I'm enjoying the power delivery but not the handling at the moment.

Ps it's always in sport mode

My steering feels great in my 184.i always have mine in individual with only the engine as sport.i have the standard bridgestone potenzas on mine.

Have you checked the pressures are correct? Directional tyre fitted correct way? Correct size?

My 184 ST on Bridgestones never gave me confidence in pushing hard through corners. Recently changed to Pilot Sport 4 and it is perfect now. Amazing grip and brought the car alive. Just needs more power now

I will check the pressure this afternoon, the tyres are on the right way as that was the first thing I checked. Could it also be that the front tyres haven't worn in properly yet?

I may be yabbing on garbage but it can be many factors,could be tyres but comparing the mk3 FR to mk2 FR on paper..according to Parkers
Mk3:
Fuel Capacity 50 litres

Mk2:
Fuel Capacity 55 litres

Perhaps you're noticing the small difference in the width and wheelbase when going around corners which affects your confidence in steering or the mk3 has used different steering rack in comparison to mk2.

May not be a fair comparison in handling department but..
I have jumped from GT86 to Leon and the difference in handling is hugely noticeable going from RWD with excellent steering feel which feels very direct in comparison to the steering in Leon even with sport mode engaged.

I find that in mine the initial feedback from the steering is almost non existent, it really caught me out the first few times are you can't really tell what the tyres are doing or how much grip they have. It feels like the harder you push into a corner the more feedback and feeling you get about what is actually going on.

Am pretty sure thats tyre related though, have a feeling that changing them for something different will change that

You have also gone from a beam axle mk2 to an independent rear mk3

It took me a little while to accept that the independent rear FEELS softer when doing the same job

No, not just you either. One of my biggest gripes with the FR 184 TDI I have is the amount of roll you get. Even though the suspension is supposed to be 15 mm lower than the standard car.
Even stationary on a fast road, cars flying past would make the car rock a little.

I had the Bridgestone on from new, and the best thing I did was get rid and bought Michelin PS4s all round as they had to come off the car. Bloody horrible tyre. Especially in damp conditions. Every set of bridgestones that I have had on a car either gave tram lining or bad feedback and grip.

The other thing is what size wheels have you got on your 184 at the moment? I'm running 18" performance wheels. The Wheels give me a lower tyre wall. Can handle corners really well. As there is less flex. Also watch out for the front tyres as they seem to wear quite badly.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I'm running the18" titanium alloys. I had a play with the tyre pressure and it was around 35psi at the front and 33psi at the back, reduced it 3psi all round as was advised this by someone else.. Seems to handle a lot better now.. Apparently as my tyres are new they need to wear in a bit also

you definitely need to give new tyres time to bed in.

Also, I've no experience of the RS3's but I tried the RS2's on a previous car and I didn't like the soft sidewalls. Turn in was not as sharp compared to something like the michelin PS3 or Pirelli PZero Nero. Maybe the RS3 have similar soft sidewall properties?

Seconded. Had the rain sport 2s in the past. Nice tyre, fantastic grip in dry and wet conditions. But yes the tyre walls on them were soft as I remember.
