Do NOT fit winter tyres to front only. You are likely to spin around on a bend as front grips but back let's go. Winter tyres give lateral grip as well as better traction & improved braking.
Winter tyres are not just for ice & snow but are an improvement in all conditions at low temperatures - typically below 7C.I have only ever fit them to the front and never had a issue with the rear wanting to over take the front
I can see your point but it still comes down to how you drive in the snow if like a said plank well yes I can see that happening but if you drive normal and for the road conditions you will be fine with just fronts
