Panic buying fuel?

I must admit i have.
Was on my way back from Birmingham today (lorry driver) listening to Jeremy vine on the radio.
Had an item on there about driver shortage and ques at the pumps.

I do over 3/4 of a tank a week just to get to and from work and knew i only had just under 1/4 in the tank.

Rang my missus at home to ask her to go top her tank up (fiat 500 1500d) so i could use her car next week and got a barrage of abuse (thats another story).

So when i got back to my car, i went straight to the petrol station. Was busy but didn't have to que.
They'd already run out of diesel and the cheaper petrol, only the premium stuff left.

So £75 later and if i dont use my car this weekend, ill have enough to get to work next week.

Just putting it out there that ime "one of them".
But ill be able to sleep tonight knowing ill be able to get to work on Monday.

Have you been to the pumps today?

No criticism aimed at you Rich; if I was travelling to work by car I'd probably have done the same. However, wouldn't it just have been better if the media just shut the feck up about what was apparently a only minor supply issue involving only a few filling stations, instead of creating hysterical headlines and causing panic buying which turns a minor issue into a major one??

I agree.
If i didn't have the radio on, id been blissfully unaware.
But yeh, purely for work purposes.

Iff the odd petrol station was shut here n there, customers would just move onto the next.

Let the media know and let the hysteria ensue.
A part of which im guilty of this time.

Shortages and panic buying usually caused by the media.
^100% this.

I’ve not reacted to the media’s attempt at creating a potential national panic buying frenzy out of what IMHO was a non-newsworthy event. I am fortunate that I’m retired so don’t need to use my car for a daily work commute, so I intend to buy petrol as normal (I’ll probably need to refill mid week next week), provided the filling station I normally use has supplies.

When I walked past the mega expensive filling station in my village this morning, they were restricting sales to £30 per customer. Walking back home an hour later and they had closed, so they’d either sold out, or were keeping what fuel they did have left for their regular customers (I’m not one of their regular customers) - they’ve done this before when there’s been fuel shortage, and I don’t have a problem with them doing that.

I certainly have no issue with people filling up for the coming week if they have no option but to use their car for work. What does annoy me are the panic buyers who have an almost full tank of petrol / diesel already, and only use their car for the 2-3 mile school run and / or weekly supermarket trip, but they feel the need to buy £5 - £10 worth of fuel to top their tanks up to the brim. They were probably the people who cleared the supermarket shelves of ‘essential’ supplies during the first Covid lockdown last year, rather than considering the needs of others 😠 🤔.

We've got a petrol station behind us and it's been slammed all yesterday and today (With people filling the jerry cans too).
I haven't put in in my car since picking it up (It's got about £20 in apparently) and at least for work, I should get there and back without using any (hybrid so I'll be sticking with the eco mode).
Next weekend, I'll probably use some of it, but hopefully people will chill out a bit more before then.

I've got 125 miles left in the Cupra and I'll be buying some Wednesday for a big trip Thursday hoping people have got what they need and new stuff comes in lol hoping vpower is last to go as its more expensive.

The media just need to shut up for stuff like this, for them it's about people on their site and revenue but it cripples a nation when they just blurt out stuff that wouldn't of mattered as if no one said anything. Petrol stations ran out of petrol or diesel all the time so you just go to the next one.

Crazy... I also get why people join in as they need the fuel for work etc when people who don't need it as much rush to grab whatever they can.

I managed to fill the motorbike last night, so I'll use that for getting to work.
My leon was down to 45 miles so managed to get £30 max allowed.
Here in Stoke-on-Trent it's been chaos.
Media caused this.

That happened a few years ago.
Changed the ingredients or took the sugar out or something.
Yes, I have a Glaswegian Scottish friend who told me the manufacturers introduced a low sugar (or diet) version, but with the trend towards reducing sugar content in soft drinks, I think they might have also reduced the sugar content in the original version now.

My friend actually preferred the ‘healthy’ low sugar diet version, much to the disgust of his Scottish mates 😂. For them, it was the ‘full fat’ version or nothing!

There is an ‘original’ version available in glass bottles referred to the date Irn Bru was first released, not tried it though, often on a Sunday morning the Bru doesn’t touch the sides enroute to kill the drouth so the taste doesn’t factor.

The 'full leaded' version has indeed been messed with to reduce the sugar content and now has added sweeteners; but it's still gluggable unlike most modern versions of classic soft drinks. Drinks with artificial sweetener make me feel ill, which is most of them these days unfortunately

Went to Silverstone for BTCC and took a fair bit of a detour to find fuel for the bike, it was needed as I wouldn’t have got home.

Got back home and 6 out of 8 stations had run out, with one only having unleaded, the other one (an extortionate BP services) had diesel. I did get some fuel for the car cuz it was on fumes and I have to (temporarily) park the bike up for medical reasons.

Kinda makes me think in a real emergency that this country would be totally fecked

I’m holding off getting fuel until later this week when I’ll need to be using my car. Hopefully, all those selfish idiots people who helped create the current situation and just filled up (even though they won’t be driving anywhere) won‘t need to fill up again for some time. That should leave more petrol / diesel to go around for those with a genuine need - essential workers, everyone else who needs to drive to and from work, those shopping for elderly relatives etc.

This picture was posted on the Golf R forum by one of their forum members (Clarkie48). Words fail me 😦. All I can say is they must have a very large lawn and / or a very petrol-hungry lawnmower if they need to buy what looks like 6 or 7 Jerry cans of petrol!
