If you have the discs already, (and apologies if you know this already) ignore whatever is cut into the surface, its about the internal veining to dissipate the heat. You should be able to see which way the veins are....

Thanks mate the veining appears to be straight. Used a lazer pen to check so their not directional in that sense.

Are they exactly the same? If yes - not handed.
Or is the pattern opposite? If yes - handed. Would usually be marked LH & RH somewhere on the OD or tophat?

That is true - that the major reason to use handed discs is for the improved cooling through the veins, however discs can also be handed by the face slots/grooves etc. More for NVH though rather than performance.
Then you have some OEM's 'looking at you Merc!' who use 1x curved vein disc on BOTH LH and RH sides :banghead2

We've talked about this before :D And yeah I assumed they would be directional inside.

But yeah agree if the veins are straight then the cut surface may have better orientations.

And remember its not just Merc ;) Very expensive RS6s was what we were talking about last time ;)

You have to go to full fat V8 AMG to get curved vein directional discs - but even some recent AMG's they are 'bean counting' and using 1x directional disc on both sides!!

Vented discs work like centrifugal air pumps (similar to turbo centrifugal compressor), sucking air in at the centre - accelerating is radially and expelling it out the OD vent. Straight veins obviously don't care which way they are spinning. Old turbos used to use straight vein compressors. They figured out curving the veins made these compressors more efficient at pumping air. Same applies to brake discs - but then you need 2 opposing discs to work efficiently. When they use 1x curved vein discs on both sides this is just dumb - if you're not going to the effort of having them handed then just don't bother and use straight veins!

My RTS performance discs have straight vanes and a similar design to MTEC.

The specialist that fitted them had them on his own Mk7.5 Golf R Estate and I was informed that they were directional (but for the J hook design). Long story short they’ve been fitted in the direction as per the photos below.

Albeit, the AP racing design upon which they’ve been copied has the J hook with the opposite orientation (but these will have directional vanes).

This gets weirder for me.

Because with the Mtec you can not fit both discs the the J facing towards the front of the car.

With both discs flat on the floor one disc has the J like that and the other has the L that way.

Errr

So they are handed

J will go on left side, L will go on the right side.

So they will face front of car.

Or am I missing something

Might be worth posting a photo.

I would be inclined to agree with at @Damo H but depending upon which disc is fitted to what side you can change the orientation of the J to an L or vice-versa.
