Cold start problem

Hello folks :)

I went through a number of posts, but couldn't really find a really appropriate answer.

The problem is the following. On coldish mornings, the very first start of my 2004 Leon TDI 110 (ASV) is problematic. There's hesitation before it starts, and when it finally does, there's a quite a decent puff of white smoke behind it. The car cranks a number of times, and finally starts.

It's got a brand new battery (maybe 2 months old), and once it starts, throughout the day there are no starting problems. It purrs (well, as much as a diesel can purr) when running, no problems whatsoever. It's just the start that bothers - and it's only the first start in the morning that's problematic. It's rather suspicious that I had the problems a few weeks back, but I spent 2 weeks in Greece on vacation (where it was much much warmer and the car was in the sun, though covered) and it had no problems at all, so I'm thinking that it's the cold weather that's causing the problems.

Any ideas?

After dropping off the car at a VW service center, I was told that there's soot buildup in the engine itself, and that they need to take off the head and clean it up. Apparently, the EGR was clean. The car has done approx 60k miles.

Any ideas? Does this make any sense at all?

If it is a soot build up, then surely the smoke that it was putting out would have been black and not white???

My old man was driving the Leon, and I was in a car behind him on the way back from the garage, I could see black smoke come out of the back while he was accelerating.

I have to admit sssstew it sounds like a crock of s**t to me too.

If its hard starting and emitting black smoke then you could have an internal fuel leak, i.e injector seals.

Turns out that it is a crock of ****. Took the car to a diagnostic service where a friend works (should've gone there in the first place) - turns out the ignition timing was off. They sorted it out, and now the car starts first crank!
