Ok so car went in for MOT yesterday & failed! grr!

Only thing was the centre rear exhaust bracket broke, so figured this cant be to bad, phoned my local skoda garage to do the work gave my VIN number and they quoted me £205 + VAT for bracket replacement, i was like WHAT, she told me its attached to the exhaust so i need a new rear exhaust system?? does this sound right?
Have a Cupra R 210 i cant imagine seat would have designed sommin so stupid! ? ? any 1 have a seat layout of an exhaust system?

This problem has been replaced before on my old Cupra Sport, however it only cost me £30 they just replaced the bracket cuz they "prone to going"

Anybody else had anything like this happen?

also got quoted
£260 + VAT for 80,000 mile service
£45 + VAT for Brake fluid change (as I've not had it done)

So since Jan 09 I've spent £450 on insurance. £53 on MOT £127 on 2 new tyres, now meant to spend another £585 just so i can drive the damm car! thank god my TAX aint due till june!

I have to agree with whats been posted in here, a dealer is going to advise you on the best fix (and sometimes most costly) sometimes thats the best route to take others not. I would say get to a smaller almost backstreet garage and ask them to take a look if its suitable to weld, it might just be that its fractured and come off and the metals quite clean, or it may be that its corroded to hell at which your wasting your time and an exhaust is the only fix.

One other thing I would question is whether its actually caused a leak in the exhaust because if it hasn't then it can only fail the MOT if not having the bracket makes it insecure.
My mums astra went for MOT at vauxhall and failed on one of the brackets on the rear silencer had come off, she said she didnt want it fixing by them because her son was a mechanic for BMW so he would fix the exhaust, they then went and consulted the tester and came back with the car and a pass cert saying that the tester had rechecked the guidelines and as long as its secure and not leaking its ok, convenient

Also I would add that this is sometimes the final push for people upgrading to a performance exhaust system due to it not being a great deal more than a standard one. It would be worth you checking out a few exhaust centres if you do have to replace it and don't want a performance one.

From what I can tell the mounts on your exhaust are on the centre section and the rear silencer, neither of which should be that price surely. I could understand if it was the cats (although I would expect it to be more expensive).

I think you definately need to get it checked out at a smaller garage where you can take a look yourself. Unless of course it was a smaller garage that mot'd it.

this happened to me on my first MOT 2 years ago through a dealer. being a new Cupra R owner i told them to get on with it as had to drive to London the next day. 200 odd quid plus VAT. Half an hour later....garage called back unable to get the part so could weld it for 20 quid......so went for that.....still spot on 2 years later. they'll try and make as much as they can for sure but no need to get ripped off when a weld can do the trick.

my back box , droped just b4 xmas , the bracket had snapped off , took it to my uncle , (local garage)
and he welded it back up., job done,

as far as welding is done , unless the part is totally rotten it can be sorted out ,

his defender (which we use on the beach for launching our jet skis ) when i used it i managed to snapp the rear section, when i priced it up it was stupid money , so we just adapted an old exhaust off something else that had been swapped for some reason and made it fit the landy, - it still passes the mot (and no hes not an mot'r ) and didnt cost nothing , or just some welding rods ,

Ok, so todays update!

Got a recommendation off a friend about a garage near me, gave them a ring, (spoke to Dave, seems to be the name for any1 to do anything with cars!) he told me bring it in we'll see if skoda are having you on! i told him that i'm on a tight time limit due to the MOT countdown, he said bring it down this eve then, said don't think i can make it, said i finish about 5ish, (when he shuts) said give him a call and see. so gave him a ring about 5ish said he'd stay open for me.

So run car to him. Got the car in the air had a look said it can be fixed no prob, got his welding gear out and cracked on with it, told me he knows what it can be like trying to get rush jobs done with no time to do em. anyway cut a long story short he NEVER CHARGED me for the welding; said that he was happy to help out and that he don't like to see ppl ripped off! (so he was helpful on the phone, stayed open for me, fixed my problem, and didn't even charge me!)

So i now have my new favorite garage in town with a nice guy to help me out in future. did give him a token £10 for his efforts but have also now givin him a great reccomendation, & i've also booked my 80,000 service (using Seat Parts, as this was an option to me) in with him next week!

So Express Autocare on Warf Road Peterborough! THANK YOU AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I take it you mean the bracket near the cat, If so it is NOT fixed to the exhaust, The exhaust just hang's from it on rubbers.

sorry for the hijack much did it cost you DK for the exhaust;)

Great to hear you avoiding buying a new exhaust and the serive you recieved. I don't think the stealers even have welders any more do they?

Glad you got it sorted and sounds like you found the right man lol, Dealers tend not to offer to weld things because you can't warranty the fix (as well as losing on the part of course).
Your fault determines where you should take it, stuff like welding and fabrication are less likely to get done at a dealers apart from on older cars maybe so somewhere like you took it is ideal, warranty stuff and weird faults on newer cars then dealer knows best, and then for older cars (10 years plus) with odd faults sometimes a specialists are the best option as they sometimes have more knowledge than the dealers in that area, thats definaitely true with BMW's at least.

If its the same centre exhaust mount that is the common problem on the golfs etc, i had mine welded for a tenner!!

Just a thought really dude, as if its the case whereby something has rusted away, surely it can replaced and welded nicely?

Jimski

same on my mssus mk4 golf and also the new bettle, a quick weld sorts it,

The brackets went on my exhaust 2 months before the warranty ran out. The exhaust itself still had plenty of life in it so when SEAT said they had to replace the centre section and backbox under warranty i was well chuffed :D Parts were priced around £200 without labour, so that price would be about right.

Obviously if it can be welded then i'd be getting that done unless your car is still under warranty which im assuming its not :(
