You should also note that the speed per 1000 rpm is marginally different - not enough to be significant but I wonder why there is a difference.

The speed/1000 rpm will be quoted for the standard model in the range. The 1.4 TSi is fitted with 16" wheels/tyres on the base SE model yet in the 1.8 TSi the FR trim is standard with the 17" wheel/tyre combination. The small difference will result from this. In truth it would be totally unnoticeable on the road, at 70 mph there would be a 19 rpm difference.

They are similar, but ever so slightly bigger.

16" 205/55 Overall Tyre Diameter= 632mm
17" 225/45 Overall Tyre Diameter= 634mm
18" 225/40 Overall Tyre Diameter= 637mm

it would be a very small ~0.5% but sometimes that can just be enough to change the c02 to 119g instead of 120g.

I have owned both. I had a 1.4TSI FR 5 Door for 6 months and now I have a 1.8TSI SC FR. In all honesty, the power difference is hardly noticeable, especially in round town driving (the 1.4 felt more powerful in this situation).

The power of the 1.8TSI is only noticeable at higher speeds in high revs.

The MPG is almost identical, but then I can only achieve 35mpg tops in either based on the way I drive.

Hope that helps

hello..
did you find any difference in the driving due to the suspension layout difference?
most reviews talk of almost similar attitudes in normal driving conditions, but as rigged ADAC voting showed, journalists are not to be trusted..

I drove the 1.4 TSI SE and 2.0 tdi 184 fr. Both very different cars, the SE was very comfortable and competent through the bends but definitely more roll and less grip. Probably more down to the high profile tyres and softer suspension. The fr had a lot more grip and was very stable through country roads at speed, inspired a lot of confidence but less comfortable and found bumps that didn't exist in the SE. I went for the FR 1.4 in the end because I preferred the 1.4 engine, so smooth and quiet at low speed with a lot of torque and more than quick enough on the road. But I chose the FR trim over the SE because with all the options I wanted it was better value than speccing the SE to similar level, also I get the driver modes and slightly nicer interior trim. I also prefer firmer suspension.

I'm looking at changing my 07 plate 2.0 TSI FR for a new 1.4 TSI FR. Had a test drive over the weekend and although it's not quite got the same power as my current Leon I was very impressed with the 1.4. Just wondering if anyone else had made the same switch and what are their thoughts. Cheers
