I scrapped our sh1tter a month or so ago and the fleet went down by one - but now we may need a people carrier so I'm looking at Bammers. (Looked at Tourans, don't like).

(On the plus side here - heavy enough to tow a Leon on a trailer ;) :D )

I'd considered getting a 1.8T (-then move current Leon turbo to Bammer :D ) but thinking about towing, I suppose a diesel is the way forward......

So, help me - I know f*** all about diesels really. I don't quite know where to start, so can you please give me a general overview on the 130tdi?

Great engine IMO. Best one of the 1.9 lot. Bomb proof with the possible exception of camshaft issues and clutch/flywheel issues, both of which are fairly common on other models.

Service history with the correct oil (VW505.01 as a minimum) is highly desireable. Service history with receipts for vague oil changes with bog standard oil is to be avoided.

Cambelts are a little shorter interval on the Alhambra due to the extra weight to haul around, and you might be looking at 40k miles or 60k miles change interval (or 4 years), rather than 60k or 80k on Leons.

EGR has a tendency to block with gunge, but a couple of hours and very dirty hands is usually enough to sort it.

Turbo vanes have a tendency to stick due to the same reason as the EGR. Italian tuneup helps keep them moving, or a turbo strip & clean.

Other than that, not a lot.

Dave get a 150PD as you get more value for money in the sense of body kit, wheels etc...

Heating fuel??? The darkside gets darker and darker!

(You're starting to see how little I know about diesels  )

I found mine relatively simple .... glowplugs out ... turn key and it starts :D

You'll find it a very different drive to yours but oddly relaxing although that said, yours isn't short on torque.

PD130 Bamma with a Hybrid and an FMIC + cheeky remap would be a stealth weapon

Glowplugs heat the combustion chamber, not the fuel. The fuel (diesel) is ignited by the heat generated by compression in the bores, and the glowplugs help when the weather's freezing. The auxilliary heater is a bank of separate glowplugs which sit in the coolant waterway and heat the coolant. This helps not with starting, but with getting the engine up to heat from cold.
