When changing from 1st to 2nd i get a big chunch and it wont go in, this only happens at high revs or going over 25mph, if i change down a gear over 25mph it will still chunch and only go in under 25mph. changing from 1st to 2nd at low revs or under 25 it will change perfect with no chunch same when gearing down. when in 2nd i can accelerate all the way up to 50/60mph feels fine, evry other gear is fine. clutch is fine, i heard a lot of ppl change oil to redline mt-90. did a search on this but no one was specific of their problem.do you think the box is fooked! cheers
sorry for the essay lol

No it wont im afraid, my lcr 225 has only got 24k and mines got a slight noise like a bearing ive even change the oil still the same just gona live with till i punch a hole through the gearbox casing lol

Sounds like the box has had a hard life. They don't last long if you treat them badly. A friend of a friend needed a new gearbox 1 month after picking up an LCR (2nd hand) as he was driving it like a c*** all the time...redline 1st & 2nd frequently.

Thinking about it, how often do you really need to go over 25mph in 1st anyway? Is this happening when you are racing people? Driving normally, you should be shifting at about 2 - 2.5k in each gear.

True, just got a bit of hope my dad knows someone who recoditions gearboxes and he said he will sort the 2nd gear synchromesh out for £150 providing we take out the gearbox out and put it back in! my dads a bit of a mechanic he has removed gearboxes before but is this one any different to most cars or similar?

By chunch do you mean it crunches when changing into second? The VAG gearbox is well known for being notchy (3rd to 2nd is a little too notchy for my liking) compared to say a nice Honda box.

I'd try a full gearbox oil change (use the std VAG approved oil) and see if that helps first.

The box is nothing special and as long as you know what you're doing then removing it and placing it back won't be a problem. Make sure both of you have a good hold of it before removing the final few bolts though, they are seriously heavy and you don't want to injure yourselves or drop the box for that matter.

Every gear feels perfect and smooth even 2nd ( under 25mph) but changing to 2nd from any gear over 25mph results in a big crunch and it wont let me in until the car slow down

In that case it sounds like synchro mesh. Higher gears will be spinning at a lower speed that the engine and the speeds aren't matching when attempting to engage the gear.

yea nice one that makes sense, so what ill do is get it reconned and refill oil with mt-90 or OEM then it should be fine thanks.

mine is a crunchy between 1st and 2nd but only when the engine and gearbox is cold. If you let it warm up for a few miles first, the crunchy feeling goes away and 1st to 2nd is a lot better. Just don't floor it until it's warmed up.

ye mine went not so long ago, i paid £690 for a new box n clutch fitted! which i dnt think is a far from reasonable price! my car had done 92k on original box!

Why would you change down to second doing in excess of 25mph??
You should be able to boost in third without any problems
Only place i can see these speed gear changes would be on a track, sounds as though maybe working the box hard too
