a silly answer i know, but cooler oil.. Oils lubracating properties deteriorates as it gets hotter than a certain temp. Ive thought about one often.
 
hi what are the benifits of fitting an oil cooler ?

Keeps your oil cooler. Only needed if you're running high oil temps for long periods of time, i.e. on the track.

The downside is that it will take the oil longer to get up to temp.

I can't see that you'd need one on a standard valver for normal road use? Only time I've wished for one is on an alpine pass in the middle of summer....

This i guess depends on the qaulity of oil but what would be to high? I run 94°C on an average run which is a 20°C higher than before i replaced my thermostat and coolant (originally was constantly flowing thro top and bottom hoses when stuck open). But i can see up to 100° on a spirited drive over 20 miles. I know this isnt super high but with lubricating properties deterioting with increased heat is seems high.
 
im also thnkig of fitting an oil cooler to my 8v as i ran 2hundreths of a second quicker at crail today when my oil was at 75 degrees than when it was at 92 , anyone know where to find a sandwich plate?
 
I don't mean to hijack but mine always stays between 70-75 is that normal?

70-75 is quite normal unless it's hot weather or you're thrashing around.

0.02s over a quarter mile? A gust of wind, change in ambient temperature or slightly different clutch action could make that difference. How have you narrowed it down to oil temperature?
 
Since my new radiator my oil temp is always 80 - 86......

I am no expert....(anything but) but like alpine said a quicker shift or gust of wind........for cooler temps maybe try a bonnet lift ?? get a bit more air in there and keep things cool that way.
 
changing the oil regulary with quality stuff will probably have more of an effect than fitting an oil cooler with old oil in the engine, im talking about cars which spend most of their time on the public road.

If i was going on track days often ect id consider one definatly or if i had a highly modded motor

As for quater mile runs, most people push their cars to the start ect and youve only got around 15 seconds of flat out, doubt a cooler will make any difference except to your wallet.
 
the reason i narrowed it down o oil temp was that i was running consistent 16.8s all day then i let the car cool down for a bit and ran a 16.6 , also won the race with a car that i periously couldn't so i thought it may have something to do with oil temp:redface:
