Hi

I have just bought an ABF engined 2.0L 16v with air con. This is actually my third 16v but the first with air con.

Q) Is it true that the air con slows the the car down? Like i have heard.

My previous 2 16v's without air con were, lets say, very quick, now my current one with air con is NO WHERE as quick throughout the rev range.

So is it true that the 16v with A/C is slower? Or is does it need a tune up?

Thanks
Max

although there is load on the engine its not alot, id be suprised if youd notice the power difference on the road. i know people who race go to lengths such as removing aircon and powersteering for a few bhp.

id say ifs there is a noticable lack of power get it looked at. O and aircon doesnt effect engine load turned off, so i doubt its your problem.

Any ideas as to what could be causing the slowness? It's just had a major service and everything is working/looking good.

Does it need a tune?

It is definately slower than my previous 16v's as now my mate can overtake me in his Imprezza WRC - not looking good, as he couldn't when i was in my previous ones.

Don't really want to get rid of it as i love the MK2's, especially the 16v's.

Cheers

air con does effect performance of cars, when on it uses a few bhp. but this must be the non cupra sport version you've got? does it have a sunroof? if so then its prob just the gti, not gti cupra sport. your mate must have a really slow scooby for you to have been able to shake him off! my mate had an impreza and his car was a long way ahead any cupra's, even the mk'3's!

Yes, current one is non Cupra Sport with sunroof as well.
Both my old ones were Cupra Sport models and completely standard apart from the exhaust, 1 was RR'ed at 165bhp and the other was RR'ed 169bhp.

Mateys Imprezza, i can still keep up with it in my current 16v but not getting near it is the problem, although mateys 2.0L Turbo Imprezza is completely standard, and RR'd @ 235 bhp

I have booked it in for a RR and/or tune and see what happens.

Will let you all know the outcome.

PS - I love racing Scoobies!!!!!!

My 16v GTi had aircon, although i never used it. Ben (roly) drove mine and said it seemed slower than his 16v Cupra. I'm guessing the GTi is abit heavier than the Cupra but probably not enough to make a huge difference.

Definately worth getting it checked out!

never had a race with a scoobie, but might chance it now! yeah the gti is a bit heavier but apparantly it has the same 0-60 time as the cupra, weird! but yeah let us know what the results come out like. by the way i had a race with an audi tt the other day, obviously new i would loose, but there not that quick at all really, only pulled away as i was hitting 5000 rpm in third gear, changed to 4th and it started to leave me. but still i hate tt's and there slow for an 'exotic' car!:D sorry to anyone that likes them! i know o shouldn't hate them as they are related to our seat's! but owell...

I thought this about mine too but the other way round. My old Cordie 2.016v with AC was stupidly quick and my current Ibiza cupra non-AC is not anywhere near as lively. Not got to the bottom of it yet but could be down to the final drive as it seams to be lower revving at higher speeds? Not sure but guessing here.
Will let you know if I hit the problem but only replacing stuff as it breaks or wears out as on a budget.

I'll happily keep up with Scoobies until 65mph then pray you have a corner coming or you will be made to look a donkey. Soon as you it the top end in third you'll see them hammer past.

Sorry, love ibiza's but it ani't got the BHP to get close. Keeping up fine, getting past - no chance.

you loose about 2.5 bhp when ac is on.
try advancing the ignition timing on the distributor...

I find this thread a bit confusing and entertaining at the same time. I am in love with my valver, but I'm not gonna lie to myself and say its as quick as a scooby to 65. Personally i know its quicker then your average eurobox, but if I come up against a 172/182, CTR or Cooper S, I know its going to be very close. Now if my Ibiza does 0-60 in about 7.8s and a scooby does it in 5 I know I'll be getting my ass whooped right from the start.........let alone by the time I'm doing 65 in 3rd gear ;)

Don't mean to be pissing on the bonfire, but just trying to keep the thread down to earth

Boo! Thought it was floating along quite nicely, cloud like almost.

Never been barve enough to try from a stand still - or should read too old. Baby seat weighs too much. BHP wins hands down I'm friad.

2nd on a 16v is a winner though. Dip the clutch for 3rd you get stuffed.

yeah i agree with czechboy, you can't beet a scooby, not anywhere through the rev range at any speed. But i will have to admit that the 16 valve is quick-ish, but my 8 valve wouldn't beet much, tbh i'm bored of the speed now, and its 9.8 s 0-60 standard, but a fiat punto 1.25 16 valve is 0-60 in 10.2 or summin, so that proves there not that quick really, which is why i want a mk3 cupra r!

Youd be quicker towing a caravan :funk:

A re-mapped mk3 ibiza is about on par with a scooby doo so theres no way a standard 16v would keep up with it! Mines currently running around 210bhp at the moment and i could just about keep up with a MR2 turbo the other day which has roughly the same 0-60 as a scooby doo.....

Jaketelbot- why the cupra R? they only map to the same as a normal cupra, and all you get is Brembo brakes and lower suspension for the extra K or so, Youd be better getting a normal cupra and have a re-map and builing from there. Just my 2ps worth tho and alot of the other mk3 lads agree even ones with a cupra R ;)

David.

well as i said in the mk3 section to the guys, i will most likely go for just the cupra, as i really want to go back to a yella one, but they said it'll be really hard to find a cupra r in yellow, but more chance with just the cupra, and they've already explained the whole cupra r vs cupra thing, don't take it too literally what i said, i was just saying it too make a statement! but come on if you had the choice between the r and the cupra you'd go for it?!?! but yeah it doesn't bother me settling for a cupra i will def get whichever nice yellow one turns up! most likely a cupra. so we'll see, i've got a lot of saving to do fisrt!
