205/45/17 instead of 215/40/17 on FR?

Tyre size is that for a reason. I wouldn't recomend it. For instance I am looking to replace my tyres on my 2.0 FR. I want uniroyal rainsports however been told that due to the extra weight from the 2.0 tdi lump we need the Extta load tyres
Rainsports 3 are XL anyway are they not?

Actually they come in both 91 and 94(XL) ratings. Time to check mine!

nope it will mess with your speedo it will show less speed than it should by 4 mph etc etc
I was going to do this as the tyres I wanted where 100 quid cheaper but didnt bother stick with what the book says..

215/40R17 tyres are appx 604mm diameter
205/45R17 tyres are appx 616mm diameter ( you would be travelling faster for the same engine rpm and gear )
nearest tyre size would be a 195/45R17 which is appx 607mm diameter but is probably too narrow for a 7.5" rim
I'd advise against it on one key reason.
The 205s wont protect your alloys from kerbing, whereas the 215s will.
Learnt this lesson the hard way when I thought it'd be a handy cost saving by getting the 205s
