20k service and tyres - help please?

I know it's a bit cheeky coming on here and asking for help, but I figured you guys'll know everything I could need to. I'm slowly learning what we could have done with our car, but since it was one of the very first, we'll know when we get the next one!

Anyway, we're fast approaching the 20k service and a new set of front tyres. I think they're Bridgestones currently (sorry, it's dark and I can't see - I know, I know  )

What do I do about new tyres? Get them with the service? Get them somewhere else? And how much should my service cost me?

All advice (beyond "find out more about your car"!) is gratefully received!

Well done on getting your tyres to 20k. Mine are about done at 11k on the front. Unless your dealer is amazing, you'll find that going to a tyre speciaist is cheaper.
Shop around and compare the total prices. Don't know about 20k service cost, but I think some folk on here have had 20 k services and will help with figures.

My tyres at 22.000Km are also starting to slip. I got my 2.0FSI woth Pirelly P7 on 16" alloys.

I was surprised how fast these tyres were gone. What kind of tyres have you got both of you?

Hi Mate
As was suggested above.
Tyre specialist WILL be cheaper.
As for the service we do servicing on those cars.
Does not say if yours is a PD or not or the year.
So for 1 20k service you could be looking at about £136 all in for that service.
But depends on the year.
We only use genuine parts and we are not far from you.
We are based in Chesterfield and can service all VAG model cars and also new ones that require to keep in with the warranty.
Hope this helps you
Sarah

I just squeezed 21k out of my front Bridgestone RE50's 17 inch though I do 90% motorway miles.

If money was no object I would have replaced them with Goodyear F1's but at £110 a corner I just could not afford that with xmas round the corner... Kids who'd have em

So I have gone for Falken FK451's and I have been amazed how good the performance is miles better grip levels in the wet and dry lots less ESP intervention than with the Bridgestones. The Falkens cost a mere £75 each fitted and balanced.

I will be interested to see what they wear like as I am sure they must be a softer compound than the bridgestones.

It's an 04 plate 2.0 tdi sport. Still haven't got as far as looking at the tyres in daylight  . I'll try to do that tomorrow. We love it to bits, although it's got a couple of bits wobbling now which I might ask about come service time.

We'll be writing a list of places to call about service tomorrow, so I'll put a list on here of how much and where to help others out when they get that far.

As far as the tyres go, my dad - king of motoring kings :roflmao: - suggested swapping front for back tyres. good idea? bad idea? I haven't got a clue

the results are in ...

This is what we've been quoted:

Willougby's Nottingham £235
GK Group Derby £205
Francis Leicester £205
Stoneacre Peterborough £210

Seems a bit odd the difference in cost. They were all able to offer a courtesy car so long as they had enough warning.

Hope this helps someone else!

I washed the car today and examined the wheels. They are Bridgestones (I know my car after all! :funk: ) They also look like they're not yet needing changing. Do I just drive more gently than everyone else on here?!

BAD idea!!!

The rear tyres on a car are the ones that give you your cornering grip, cornering stability, braking stability, and in these ABS days, play a larger than expected part in stopping your car!!!
The recommendation is to always fit the new tyres to the rear because of this.

Tyre wise, phone up for some prices at some independant tyre shops - don't bother with kwik fit, ats etc as the prices they charge are extremely high!! One option to look at is www.blackcircles.com to get an idea of what's available at what cost!!

Let us know what you're thinking of getting, and we'll let you know, from experience, which on the list are the best to go for!!

Sounds like your getting a good deal on the service the cheapest I could manage was £221 from Camberley Seat Service centre.

As for your tyre wear I would check carefully the tread in the center portion as mine had plenty of tread on the inner and outer parts of the tyre but in the center they had worn to the indicator bars.

I have never had any tyre wear in this way before.... and before anybody mentions tyre over inflation they are bang on 35psi and checked monthly.

I wonder if this is just a trait of the Bridgestone?

Will be interested if anybody else is seeing similar on the Altea.

Greeny, what tyre spec did you order exactly? Its mainly the speed rating we need that I was after, seems to affect the price quite a bit. I know the car won't exceed 130mph, but the loads on high speed cornering are probably relevant too.

The Falkens are exactly the same spec as the Bridgestones i.e. 225 45 17 ZR which I believe are rated to 186mph...... I will need a fecking big slope for that :D

Can someone out there please tell me what pressure I should have in the 17" tyres that I have on my Altea Sport TDI? At present I'm running on 32 ppi on the fronts and 30ppi on the rears. Cheers.

I am interested in what pressures the 17s should be run at. The dealer has said run at same pressures as 16s but my local tyre place has said that is unlikely to be correct.

Just replaced all four of my Bridgestones with Pirellis see droning noise thread for reasons

Im running 35 psi all round on my 17's although more often than not i have the car loaded up with work stuff so need to run a little more in the back tyres.

I found that 32psi at the fronts made the car feel very heavy and prone to understeer... at the end of the day its all down to personal preference.
