There should be an earth on the battery that routes rounf to the battery, is that ok? have you removed and cleaned its terminals on both ends? it defo sounds like a bad earth as everyone has said or a dud battery, it may read 12v on a multimeter but it may not have enough amps to crank the engine over which could also mean a shagged alternator but it seams unlikley its a battery from what youve said, try putting jump leads from the negative terminal on the battery and put the other end onto your engine somewhere, i think theres an engine hoist mount at the rocker cover gasket that would be perfect, this will tell you if its a bad earth or not as it will basically replace the earth lead.

consider everything runs off battery voltage, lets say thats bang on 12v... you say at cranking youve got 5v? your losing 7v. either something in the starter motor circuit is nakerd, which is basically your powers/earths from battery ect. or the starter is nakerd but from the symptons id go with the masses, earths.

just double check your spare battery isnt duff, does it bump start or can a friend get their car with some jump leads.

right, i think ive isolated at least one problem to the starter as theres a strong smell of burning electrics coming form it after turning the key a few times....

only one problem....one of the nuts is rounded and looks like its welded itself to the stud
