Hi guys

Looking at selling my mk2 16v golf and getting an Ibiza mk2 16v.

took a 96 Ibiza GTI 16v for a test drive the other day. 90k on the clock. I've never driven one before, and it raised a few questions -

1. It didn't seem to pick up and go like my 16v golf, in fact it felt a bit gutless. I thought it would/should be quicker. Is this normal?

2. When I dipped the clutch to change gear the revs dropped really slowly, like diesel van slowly. Is this normal?

3. The throw of the gear stick forwards/backwards seemed really long. I know this can be reduced with a short shifter, but as standard is this normal?

It was a bit shabby anyway so i didn't get it, but thought i'd find out some more info b4 looking at more.

cheers

Rick

was it a 1.8 16v(probably, being a 96 model) or a 2.0 16v abf engined version? the revs do take a while to drop as its got a heavy flywheel. the gear throw is artificially long due to the crap gearknob, lose it and you have a shorter throw.
Also, the mk2 has a closer ratio box which is good for 0-100 but the seat version would start to walk away over that...if you ever want to go that fast.

golf is rod change, ibiza is cable on the 2ltr16v and as slack as fook.and unfortunately cables are expensive and so is a short shifter for it.
they are a bit long in the tooth now so expect to have a good hunt to find a minter.just looked in our classifieds and theres no 16v for sale on here even:shrug:

96 was the last year of the 1.816v so a face lifted one is rare(er) and as the 1.816v was a rod change it would have shifted throuhg the gears more like the golf(same 020 box different ratios)

it was ABF engine so i guess it was 2.0

how fast are they compared to a golf mk2 16v?

IIRC, slightly more torquey than a 1.8 16v mk2, but it does weigh in at about 150kg more.

I'd say it *should* be about the same. feels sluggish unless you get it on the boil though, and to be honest only feels at home at teh top end of 3rd gear plus.

Yeah i definately agree, once its going its a lot of fun, but getting it going is a lot of work unless you have a good amount of space. The gear change is crap as tandard theres now other word for it, you really do have to throw the gear stick back and forth.

I also noticed how long it took the revs to drop, and after cleaing out my throttle body it now drops a little quicker. I wouldnt have thought 90k miles would be an issue as mine is way past 100k now.

Those negatives said though, when i come onto the perfect long straight on a country road in third gear and hoof it it brings a smile to my face that no other car has :D

2ltr feels much better through the mid-range.i went from a 1.816v ibiza to a 2ltr16v cordoba, and the difference low down was like night and day.
but as said above the golf weighs less and has better gearing than the ibiza equivalent(1.816v).
