ABS Help

Hi,

I've searched and am still confused

My car is a 98 GTI Cupra Sport but there is no lights on startup to indicate ABS and certainly no evidence of it when driving

I presumed that the car was fitted with it? Is there any easy way I can check?

Mine is a 98 and does have ABS, the only thing I can think of an easy check is to look behind the front wheels and see if there are ABS sensors. Not sure if there is an easier way as never needed to check

You have abs. It must be broken + the bulb broken/ disabled for MOT.

get it vag-com'd, it should come up with 00-00 meaning it doesnt have a signal. ...but then again im no expert.

mines a '98 and has it (although I took the bulb out 'cos it was always coming on whenever the car was filthy - just muck on the sensor I reckon). It failed the MOT once because of the bulb but the garage said all looked fine - not bothered putting the bulb back in since!

Now i'm worried! If the fuse is out does that mean the bulb on the dash will be too?

edit: how would one get to the location of the bulb to check? haynes is on order!

taking the bulb out is a bit fiddly - you have to take the dashpod out but it won't come fully out unless you take the steering wheel off (that means messing with airbag!) - so you have to kind of pull it out/to one side as much as it'll go then get your hands in & try & find the right one - they're all in little blue holders that twist to lock in place, you just untwist it. Don't drop it though!

Check the fuse first. MAy just need replacing.

what fuse is it? is there a site somewhere on the net with them? i have no manual and the haynes is in the post.

i thought the cupra sport was lo-spec ? no leather / AC / ABS / sunroof etc ?

open ya bonnet and take a look above the gearbox and see if you have one of these fitted sideways with 6 pipes coming out of it ?

well looked at the fusebox under the dash (below steering wheel) and the compartment panel that comes of has no mention of an abs fuse on it on its printed listings? will have a look under the bonnet for the above pic...

Coming to the conclusion that my car dosen't have abs after all. Couldn't find the sensors or that bit under the bonnet.

You checked the behind the wheels? If theres no wire going up then no ABS!!

Sure I read ABS could also be a factory fitted option so some Ibiza's won't come with it
