ok being on the net for the past 3 weeks researching on how difficult it is to change rods. i've made up my mind now that this is something i want to do myself as it would be a great learning experience and save me money in long term (i hope) . after reader jame judd and graham's rr its enspired me to crack on myself . advice i need is that i've been told you can change the rods with the block still in the car (connected to engine mounts) ? lastly the list of tools i will need ?

i'm guessing.

1. basic tool kit with spanners , wrench and allen and torx keys
2. jack stands
3. plastigauge
4. ring expander
5. hammer

have i missed anything out ? and lastly steps

piston ring compressor tool. Big end bearings. Oil. Torque wrench both 1/2" and 3/8". Multi spline bit set.

A bit of advice, do not under any circumstances mix the big ends up between ConRods - they are a mated pair and do not mix!! When they make the ConRods they freeze them and shock them to form a crack that splits the rod from the big end. These cracks match perfectly, but only on the respective rods and big ends that they come from.

Also, you will need safety goggles - when removing the circlip that holds the piston gudgeon pin to the small end there is a chance that this will fly off and relocate itself in your eye. These are nasty little biggers to get in and out and will require a small flat headed screwdriver or a sharp tipped tool of equal strength in order to work under the circlip.

Keep the exposed engine block and removed parts under cover when not working on them to prevent dirt and crap getting in them.
