Hi all,

I'm currently trying to decide whether or not to buy a Leon Cupra TDi. The guy who's selling it will be trading it in on Tuesday in part-ex for a van. He's been offered 2.5k from the dealer but obviously he'd like a bit more if he can get it.

The car is an 04 plate with 123k on the clock (mainly motorway - he's been commuting 100 miles every day since he had the car from new) and seems to drive really nicely. It's been serviced every 10k miles at a main dealer. He's lost the log book but has receipts for all the services and a dealer is issuing a new book with the last stamp in for the service that they did. It had the cambelt replaced at the last major service (120k).

It needs a new glovebox handle (guessing about £50 from a dealer), a new n/s wing (caught a lorry trailer and pushed the very front of the panel in quite badly although only about 4" actually affected) and it's had a scrape/bump on the rear bumper (just looks like scratches and he said the bumper took the impact). There are also a couple of chips in the windscreen, out of the driver's line of vision that could probably be repaired but have passed MOT. The passenger seat is quite badly marked but I'm thinking it will probably clean out.

I figure that if I have to replace the bumper and wing, I'd be looking at maybe £300+ depending on where I source stuff from but have no idea about price on a new windscreen if it's needed.

What I'm not sure about is whether there's anything else common with these cars that might bite me if I buy the car.

To me, it seems like even with these issues, it's still a bargain.

Any thoughts (preferably related to this thread, although random musings are always enjoyed) would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Dan.

sounds very cheep mate even with the damage on it. have you got a machanic friend whoxs can check it over? if it comes across ok and the dealer can prove all the services then go for it. oh and dont touch it untill you see that log book, you can always get it checked out over the net, for any hidden secrets. good luck.

howdy

i'd make sure that you can get a new wing etc fitted and sprayed for that price, its seems unbelievably cheap.
I got a few quotes for a new door fitted and sprayed and that came to over £600.
I don't really know much about the technical stuff i'm pretty new as well..

Mine has covered 75k in 4 years and it doesn't feel like it. It was chipped with 5k miles on it and its had no adverse affects other than to the clutch plate, but then you expect that. They are a well wearing car both mechanically and cosmetically (other than stone chips!). For the money, I'd go for it. Make sure the rear bumper hasn't fouled the bodywork though. As a rule of thumb, £200 per panel to paint is about right for a decent job. The car must be worth considerably more than £2.5k once all done.

Cheers for the responses, guys!

After much deliberation, a HPI check, a look at the service receipts and an inspection at my local garage, I've decided to go for it. I'll be getting it tomorrow lunch time :)

Then I can put the Supra away for the winter and have fun in the Cupra. There must be something about cars with 'upra' in their name...

I have it and I'm pretty chuffed so far. It drives really nicely and pulls strong in all the gears. It's quicker than I thought it'd be, good fun to drive and much softer on bumpy roads than I'm used to, which is nice. It also looks pretty sweet when parked up :)

All in all, so far, I'm very glad I went for it. I'll be covering a lot of miles in the next couple of weeks so that'll be a good test but certainly no complaints so far!

She needs a good clean. If I get time I'll give her a good wash inside and out at the weekend and hopefully get some pictures up next week.
