Sunroofs just mean not enough headroom for me in most cars, so it's not really much of a choice.

I've had ma Cupra R for a couple of weeks now and have always left the A/C on
Cannot really comment if it uses anymore petrol/power, but I have been getting 300-350 miles out of a full tank and that included giving it a good old boot every now and then.
I always thought it is healthier if the A/C was left on constantly?
I had a problem with my coolant dissapearing every couple of days and it turned out to be a leak from the radiator. Has to be said though, the SEAT garage I took my car to in Stirling were excellent and it was all sorted out under warranty.
The only problem was that I had my pride and joy taken away from me for 4 days Lucky for me my sis has a Volvo S60 T5 and I got to borrow that 
My car still pulls to the left like a B**ch! Had a full allignment done and checked the pressure/balance on all the wheels, but it stills pulls
Looks like I may have to live with it!

Cracking the sunroof can also aid demisting on colder days in the first few minutes. I like using windows/sunroof in spring and autumn, but on really hot summer days it's climate all the time (though again I tend to tilt the sunroof and crack the tops of the windows to release really hot air first). This works for Toledo's as well as mk1 Leons

Air-Con on the motorway .. it is actually cheaper on fuel to use AC on the motor way over having your windows open even just an inch...aero-dynamic drag effect an all that.

I think when cruising, like you do on a motorway, the effect air con will have on your fuel economy will be fairly insignificant to be honest. As you say, drag caused by an open window will be worse.
From a different car's perspective, I currently own an MX5 and believe it or not I would be lost without aircon with the roof down.
On a baking hot day during the summer with the roof down, driving around with the roof down fast does nothing to keep you cool as the breeze is hot. Aircon is vital during these times of driving and keeps me cool on a hot day. That being said, it really makes the revs jump up on my MX5 and burns a hell of a lot of fuel plus the car feels much slower in the lower gears. I normally blast it at standstill such as at trafficlights or when I am in heavy traffic but once on the move, it comes off and the cold heater goes on.

On a baking hot day during the summer with the roof down, driving around with the roof down fast does nothing to keep you cool as the breeze is hot. Aircon is vital during these times of driving and keeps me cool on a hot day. So if a convertible doesn't keep you cool... why bother?

Slowing down a couple of MPH would probably counter it on the motorway... or not overtaking that last lorry... basically, there are much more important things to worry about than what your air con is doing. Like not arriving like a sweaty git
Rob - I invite you to simply sit in a convertible with roof/windows down on a day when the temperature hits 20 or above for more than 5 minutes. You will be reaching for the aircon knob within minutes.
Even on the move, you get roasted as the breeze is very warm and the sun is constantly beating down on your head. I normally wear a silly hat (not cap) and sunglasses and they help a little, especially the hat which stops your head from burning.
After all that though, I have gotta say though - you cannot be a convertible on a hot day.

Hot in the summer, wet in the winter, cant see the point in convertibles personally, I guess a hard top conv would be ok.
What's wrong with YOU more like! I'm British. I'm acclimatised for damp, grey, soggy days and the occasional burst of sunshine as a teaser
