Just an update on this. Firstly, thanks to everyone for all the replies and suggestions on how to approach it.
After the initial refusal by the warranty company to cover the repair costs, I escalated the case and spoke to a manager.
Thankfully, he was very amicable and agreed that a 3 year old car with 40k miles should not be suffering from shock failure. Both shocks were replaced under warranty free of charge. The car is silent now, and when cornering with a bit of speed, seems to hold the road slightly better aswell.
My advice to anyone with the same sort of problem is to stay calm, be polite and to just keep escalating your case and not take no for an answer. In my case, I think it helped that I am a registered engineer and knew this was a premature fault and could not be confused by the person at the other end of the phone telling me it was wear and tear.
As for the car, I love it again, and it is shortly out of the warranty period, so I can decide whether to keep it stock, or start looking at power upgrades etc.
