Hi everyone,

As I mentioned in another thread, I recently managed to buy a 2018 Ateca FR with the 1.4 TSI engine and front-wheel drive—pretty much the spec I had been looking for.
However, when I scanned the car with VCDS, I found the following fault relating to the N428 oil pressure regulating solenoid valve:

"9491 - Oil Pressure Regulating Valve
P164E 00 [00100111] - Electrical Malfunction
Not Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear"

Interestingly, after I clear the fault, it comes back with just the ignition switched on, without even starting the engine. This makes me suspect an electrical issue, but I’m not sure whether the valve itself is faulty or whether the problem lies elsewhere.
Has anyone had this particular fault with the N428 valve? If so, what turned out to be the cause, and how did you fix it?
I’d rather not buy a replacement valve blindly if the actual problem is with the wiring, connector, or something else. Are there any specific checks you would recommend before replacing the valve?
Also, if you have replaced yours, which brand would you recommend? Is Pierburg a good choice, or would you suggest another aftermarket manufacturer?
Thanks in advance for any advice or first-hand experience!

It seems like this is a common issue with the 1.4 TSI engines. I’ve found dozens of YouTube videos showing the exact same fault I’m experiencing, and in every case, replacing the N428 solenoid valve fixed the problem. I haven’t come across any cases where the wiring or connector was at fault—it always seems to be the valve itself.
As for aftermarket N428 valves from reputable manufacturers, HEPU is the only one currently available in stock locally. I’d have to order the Pierburg valve and wait for it to arrive, but both cost the same.
Is there any difference in quality or reliability between the HEPU and Pierburg valves? Would it be worth waiting for the Pierburg, or would the HEPU be an equally good choice?
