Ateca Front Tyre Wear - Expectations?

Well, my 2020 Ateca FR Black Edition is on about 7,500 miles now with noticeable wear to the outer shoulders of the two front tyres. Don't get me wrong, they're nowhere near the point of requiring replacement, but I guesstimate that they might do between 10,000 and 11,000 miles. Is this reasonable by other owner's experiences?

I appreciate that wear can depend on a few variables - driving style, tyre size, rod surfaces etc - but it seems a bit soon really considering that it's not driven hard, nor have the fronts been kerbed at any time.

Regardless, I think some wheel alignment checks are required as well.

Sounds a bit early to me. Mine's a Cupra but I've covered just over 20K on the original tyres which are now pretty evenly worn down to 3mm.

If the outer shoulders are wearing I guess it would point to an alignment issue.

Reckon Loadsmaster is a steady driver 😉. I got 20,000 out of my original set. You would not want to change them without 4 wheel alignment. Loadsmaster was a dealer demostrator as I recall. May be got bumped about.
Yeah, the Ateca gets a fairly easy life actually, nor my wife or me boot it about. I save that activity for my Z...! 🇯🇵😉

Our Ateca wasn't a dealer demo either. Not sure why you thought that.

Feels like you need the alignment checked.
I think I will, just finding a recommended place that you can trust. The local SEAT dealer doesn't, they just farm it out to some local garage.

From calling around, some recommend two wheel alignment, some recommend four. The cost for that can be £250 upwards! How times change! Then there's the recalibrating of the car's radar system (apparantly) because of the alignment adjustments - what?!

I get around 8-10k miles

all depends on type of driving 99% of mine is a / b roads
Similar here really - A and B roads with lots of braking and stop/starts.

I might experiment and change from the standard tyres (Bridgestones I think) to some other brand at replacement time, just to see if that makes a difference.

It is 4 wheel alignment that you want. VAG have a rear wheel alignment adjustment which needs to be setup / checked. That's the one that makes the rear wheels slope out when viewed from behind. That comes out of adjustment at times.

Whilst you are suppose to have fancy 4 wheel alignment on VAG equipment if the lane assist camera needs resticking after having the windscreen changed, tyre shops have a way of doing the alignment for more standard work. They set the front at dead centre apparently then do their normal stuff. Source a Skoda board when researching the Ateca when I first getting it. So it's an over kill to go to a VAG specialist for a tyre change... although it said you should.

The Altea's initial factory misbuild I was referred by Seat to Protyres where they were sending all theirs to. They seem a decent chain. I can recommend them. Used them over the years.

My Ateca started off on Bridgestone. Lasted 4 years. Changed them to Michelin Crossclimate. No issues. No difference in sound to the previous. Protyres did the work no fancy alignment charges with VAG approved equipment (assume they did the trick)... They did put the discs on backwards which the local Seat dealer picked up on. Got them to fix that.

They call it 4 wheel laser allignment, actually light devices hung on the wheels.

I would say 10k on the fronts, 20k on the rears, as the car, even with 4WD is predominantly a FWD set-up. I use£ to get about 15k out of a set of 4 on my A4 Quattro with full time 4WD.

That sounds like they use the Hunter Wheel Alignment machine. The VAG specialist garage that I normally take my car to only charge £60 or £80 for bigger SUVs for 4 wheels so the £250 mentioned above sounds a bit excessive. I'm not sure what they would charge if the camera needed recalibrating

Rings a bell. I got into all of that after reading you need VAG alignment on every job on the Ateca with lane assist 🙄... and Seat getting it wrong on the first production Altea's at the rear.

Toe in of the rear wheels which I understand is more specific to VAG cars... least my brother was surprised when he found his VW had to be set up at the back.... said I'd been getting mine done for years.😂 The old 4 wheel alignment.

You don't mention what make of tyres are actually fitted, I've just had to change mine which had done approx 14500 miles because of similar wear to what you describe, they were Bridgestone Potenzas, with a depth of approx 3.5 / 4.0mm left on them.

Yep, Potenzas on mine as well.

Seen a lot of cars wearing front tyres on the outer edges, often due to a lot of town driving and lock to lock steering movement, power steering allows us to get the tyres on the edges and show accelerated wear, not ruling out alignment but just an alternative answer.

I dont turn the steering wheel if I'm not moving. I know a lot of people do. Throw that one into the mix. Think that would just wear out where it's making contact. I've been totally happy with the wear on mine. After 4 years of sunlight and air it was time. Keep clear of edge to protect the cherished rims 😂.

Forgot to ask, did you replace with the same Potenzas, or go for a different brand?
