no probs can use another laptop, just mounting that image now using daemon tools, although no files seem present

Nope, you won't see any. It's a boot disk, I've never managed to see the files or contents on the disk. It only works when you set your PC to boot from it, then you'll see what happens.

If you're worried about viruses etc, simply remove your hard drive. It doesn't need it and will run with no other storage attached. Everything it needs gets loaded into memory.

I fell into that trap..

Bought the cable thinking one of my laptops must have a 9pin .. then lo and behold...both are 15pin monitor connections which is no use.

I should really check things before I get click-happy on ebay.

As far as I understand, a usb to serial conversion cable won't do the trick, as DOS (what you boot into) has no clue what USB is and can't see it as a usable connection.

Again, as far as I understand, the only option is to get hold of a computer that already has a 9pin port built into it natively.

I've got 3 laptops you can buy -- none of them have the friggin 9pin serial port haha!

On a side note, I've emailed the guys at MotorDiag to find out when they think the Komfort Manager Full 2.00 might be released..that'll save the need for dos / 9pin ports as you can do it via Windows.

If I ever hear back from them I'll let you know.

Btw, I could be wrong with my previous post, I'm just saying what I think I've gleened from other's posts.

Zomby's right, any USB involvement and DOS loses the will to live.

I am currently using this;

http://www.bigpockets.co.uk/product...3Ghz+-+1Gb+-+40Gb+-+COMBO+-+WiFi+-+Win+XP+Pro

We used them at work up until very recently, and it's a nice bit of kit for the money. It'll take Windows 7 with no problem, and with them being business laptops they seem a little bit more robust than other 'home' laptops I've owned. And it has a serial port!

Strictly speaking you don't need a laptop, if you can get a desktop PC close enough to your car then that will do fine. It might be a bit ungainly to run an extension lead to your car and have a PC and monitor sat on your passenger seat, but it's cheaper than buying a new PC. And desktop PC's seem to have held on to their serial ports a bit longer than laptops.

I kinda like the idea of having a desktop puter sitting in my garage running diagnostics

Nerd Alert ;)

Btw thanks for the linky to the laptop, I was looking at ebay and some of the prices for lappys with 9pins are silly money.

No probs, I've bought a few machines from bigpockets now and they've all been very good. If any member of my family wants a new laptop, I always send them there first before they fork out twice as much for an 'E-machines' hunk of junk!

Have you got an electric sunroof? If not I don't believe you need to change the third and higher register.

You need to find out the CCM exact type you have then have a look at this thread on TDIClub. Fingers crossed for you matey that your CCM is listed on the thread somewhere.

The three values are a 'two out of three' backup arrangement, the engine management will go for the majority decision so technically you don't need to set all three. The last Ibiza I did had the windows working after setting two values but I did the third anyway to make sure.

I don't know how the sunroof fits into it though, I don't believe any of the cars I've done this on had actually got a sunroof.

They were as listed in the post I linked to, I think I've used all variations on the various cars and they all worked. My own Toledo uses the four individual numbers, the Leon's and Ibiza's use one or the other of the set of three.

The only car I didn't get working was a later Leon, but that was because it was the newer CANBUS and the lead didn't even work.
