I was going to do it but then discovered that it can be done by sticking the key in the door and turning it... they go down... they come up...

Err going to sound thick here but i always though using the key would simply open the central locking. Do you twist it further or hold it for a few seconds

I would go try but its raining and dark out.

Hold it for a few seconds in the open position to open or in the close position to close

How cool is that I assume both drop together. Going to try this when it stops peeing down.
