Your fuel pump should prime when you open the door before you've even started the engine.

What's the point in it priming after the engine is running, fuel will already be pumping!

The noise is the aux air pump.

fuel pump primes when u turn the dash lights on..it goes 'errrrrrrrrr'

the secondary airinjection pump/aux air pump is on when the engine is first running. it does sound really loud, the pipe off the airbox (that u stick a breather filter on when u get an induction kit) is usually where the noise comes from.

i found after adding the larger bore downpipe, it got even louder and sounds shite

On my MY02 Leon Cupra the fuel pump primed when you opened the drivers door, before the key is anywhere near the ignition. I believe it is the same for al 1.8T Leons.

well this is an ibiza Q

still i would never have thought the leon was that sophisticated...yet also stupid cos it would prep for ignition even if you had just left something in the car and went to get it?

dunno but even though its not the issue...the fuel pump primes with the key in the ibiza

It's not exactly a sophisticated feature, in fact most modern cars have it. After all if you just turn the key straight to start then the fuel pump doesn't get a chance to prime fully so you may get a laboured ignition.

I've read articles critisising the feature because if you accidentaly filled a petrol with diesel then the whole fuel system can be contaminated without even starting the car.
