The other morning i came off a roundabout onto a dual carriageway, floored the accelerator in 3rd gear, there was violent juddering for a moment, then a rather loud bang from the gearbox area. The esp light was also going nuts during this. The car still drives and seems fine transmission wise, although it doesnt feel like its handling quite right. The spec of the engine/gearbox is - remap to 202 bhp 300lb/ft, helix paddle clutch/lightened/heat treated single mass flywheel, anyone have an idea of what the bang could have been?

First guesses would be:
1) Rear gearbox mount
2) Driveshaft joint

What doesn't feel right about the handling ?

Handling wise id say it feels as if a bush is goosed or possibly aligntment is out, ive tried rocking the wheels and all seems ok there, theres a bit movement when i rock the engine by hand but im not sure how much movement is normal here?

i have heard mine make a very violent bang usually has done it when i have esp on when tryin to do stupid stuff (burnout) well not a burn out but tryin to take off really quickly

do you mean the clutch was juddering? if so then it may be possible for the clutch drive plate to be finished. If the clutch is either slipping or has clutch judder then it could mean that the lining on the drive plate has either burnt out due to excessive heat or, the lining has come off compleatly.

If its not the clutch then dont worry about the above.

clutch should be ok as its not done that many miles, and it doesnt normally do it and hasnt done it since. I guess i should really just get it booked in and get it checked over

Well i shall resurrect this thread, because im good like that!

Car has recently come back from the garage, and now when I put her into 1st theres a 'clunk' to go with it.

Also noticed excessive vibration on the 'bite' point of the clutch, and i mean, steering wheel and dash wobble, very deep resonance. As soon as some revs are applied, this goes. Occasionally get this on a smaller scale when stationary at traffic, 1st engaged, clutch in.

Not noticed any 'slip' whilst driving, and with the handbrake on, clutch to 'bite' theres no slip either just positive pull just the same noise/vibration.

Now.....seems strange iv noticed this since it came out of the garage or coincidence.

However, any ideas? I'm dreading it being the clutch.....

Engine mount? Take engine cover off, grab hold of the engine and give it a hard rock. If you can rock it, your engine mount is shagged. This could effect gears engaging and the general smoothness of the car.

I can rock by hand, i can also replicate ONE of the noises by doing it vigorously!

So great kahn has given me something to sort! Is it a rear/side one that usually goes?

Il have a search, guessing its common.

Ahh nice! Iv narrowed it down, dont think its the coolant side one, its certainly not excessive.

That leaves dogbone and gearbox?

They should have a little play in them but not too much.
Don't confuse play with Rock, the way I look at it is if you put one hand at the back and one hand at the front and you can rock it so that your knuckles point towards the bonnet seal/edge of the bonnet you've got too much play

Im just trying to source this new vibration really, its only made itself known today, always had a little bit of 'chatter' from the nearside but not this.
