battery light on while driving

ok so i was driving along today when the battery light came on. i pulled in and checked the leads going to the battery and they were tight. re started the car and drove on for another bit then the light came back on again then a few mins later then went out again. now its staying on all the time. when i start the car it goes out for a few seconds then comes back on?? anyone any idea what it could be? bad earth or altenator ****ed?? would it show up on vagcom??

Time to get the multi meters out.

11.7V from the battery.. looking like a new alternator any one any idea what they cost?? will one from any leon/golf/bora do??

What is the reading from the battery when the car is running ??

Chuck the multi meter on your windscreen
get in the car,
rev it to about 4000rpm
does it go up to over 14?
