before you do anything with regards to polishing make sure the car is completely clean, youll need to clay it and ideally use some sort of tar remover, otherwise you may well inflict more damage in the process...
gtechniq p1 is a really good polish that can correct swirls marks and fine scratches by hand. its an all in one polish and the correction ability of it depends on what applicator you are using.
you'll need a Zaino Tri-Foam 6" Oval Applicator. one side is harder for breaking down the polish and 'correcting' the paint. the other side is softer and used to finish it down to a higher gloss finish
to fill the swirls/marks and leave a slick gloss finish you wont get better that 'poorboys black hole or white diamond' one specifies for darker and one for lighter cars. they are both the same formula just with a bit of colouring so buy one and it will do anything. smells nice, easy to use, great finish...
dont forget to seal in the finish once you are done with a wax or sealant or else all your hard work will be washed away in the rain.
I have a detailing business around my full-time job (working nights) so if you need any more advice feel free to pm
