Oh dear finally got round to looking at car, and things aren't looking good! Its used about half a litre of oil in the last 1k miles, and there is quite a bit of oil in the top intercooler pipe, was gonna have the other pipes off, and egr and intake manifold, and hopefully get down to the turbo to check that as well, but weather was wank so i didnt bother!

Not sure where to go from here, need some time to get a proper look at it really, weather allowing!

Can I have some advice please? Where would you guys start??

As already said, valve guide oil seals, turbo oil seals or crank case oil breather system blocked

Ohh not good, with weather permitting im about to give all mine a good clean, mani, egr etc that should help with the smoke

i wouldnt do anything until youve confirmed where your loosing oil.

compression test should rule out valve stem seals. breather system needs checking to see if clear.
from my very limited knowledge it sounds more turbo than anything else.. but my own head rebuild was on the back of a suspect k03s.. which turned out to be fine.

I have the exactly the same problem as you mate, + same model and year motor. Im 99% sure its just oil in the breather system, I took the top intercooler hose off and cleaned out the inlet, It was full of oil, and this clearer it up for a bit, but its gradually coming back due to oil in the intercooler and bottom hoses, which I've yet to clear out.

Before you spend any money I'd take the time cleaning all the breather system out and intercooler hoses etc. I'm sure if you do a search there will be posts how best to do this.

I'd also be interested in how best to do this, + is the only way to complete cure oil in the system, by fitting some sort of catch tank?

Also looking on tdiclub.com, there are numerous post on this, and sounds like a little blue smoke on cold start up is perfectly ok. Like I said, try cleaning the breatherand inlet system out and I'm sure you'll notice a difference.

confirm your problem before paying out

A compression test will not tell you anything about your valve stem oil seals. the only way your valvs can cause a lack in compression is if they are not closing fully or the valve seats are bad and need re-grinding

Cheers for the info fella's, it's the fact that its using oil which is worrying me, i'd say that points to something more serious than just a bit of oil in the intercooler pipes or breather pipes, ill let you know what I find!
