Press and holding down the boot button on mine definitely releases the boot, a quick press just unlocks it.

I don't think the lock is undone, by holding down the boot release button, as after the unlatching sound the boot is still shut and you have to still undo the catch from outside, as I tried lifting the tailgate using the edge of it, and it would not open till I used the outside button on the tailgate. so fitting struts would still not work. The hand book says hold down the boot release button for more than one second to unlock the boot, but leaving the rest of the car locked, it does not tell you to just press it.

Press and hold does release the catch but because there isn't enough upward pressure on the gas struts the lock jaw doesn't move clear of the lock pin so it is still on the first catch and is in effect shut but not locked. Apply bit more upward pressure and it will open up.

Got my granddaughter to go in the boot and she had to push really hard to open it as I held down the boot release button, the period that the latch is open is pretty short too, so if you wanted struts to open this, they would have to continually be pushing hard against the tailgate with a lot of force. So it does release the latch for a couple of secs but I won't be bothering to try and get struts to pop it open. Cost me a lot of sweets for Morgan to go in the shut boot too.
