this old chestnut again.

simple, cupra is a better car all round bar handling.....simple

and brakes, a standard 106 gti would out brake a Porsche 911 when they first came out, I remember Clarkson tested it on top gear.

Get some Brembos from an Ibiza Cupra R (plus new wheels to clear the calipers) and you should be laughing though.

i used to drive my exs 106 gti all the time, tbh, the 106 was really good fun compared. I mean i love my cupra for the torque and power, but the handling on the back end is really twitchy, and the car feels alot heavier, the thing i loved about the 106 was the power was ther almost straight away, it handled like a dream and it felt quick becus it was light, in fact when my cupra was completely standard my misses used to be able to keep up with me untill i hit about 65 - 70ish, oh and the cupra has more toys a/c, t/c etc

Edamski - I've finally made the decision to part with my cupra and will be putting it in the for sale section over the weekend hopefuly when i get some pics etc. mods are in my signature if your interested PM me.

i also had a 106 before the cupra, although it was a series 1 rallye, i put the vts/ gti engine in, brembo 4 pots, suspension etc, it was a great car, down the back roads it was great a real driving car, i still miss it for them back road blasts, but i just got fed up with the rattles and climbing in and out of bucket seats and sitting at 4500 rpm at 70mph etc, the cupra handles no way near as good and is not a real drivers car with all the tcs etc, so means proper diriving is a no go, but i see the cupra as more of a nice comfy car thats still quick looks nice and the birds seem to love it too, :D

Im not convinced, I came from a 205 gti 1.9 that was lowered and it was ok on tight bends like 30-40mph but it felt faster at speed coz its made of bake bean tins granted it maybe more fun but i dont think it handled any better on faster flowing bends than my cupra, i mean my cupra is on coilovers so makes abig difference. the pug was crap on fast flowing bends and understeered then oversteered, like thru flowing bends i can be at like 70-80 in the cupra where as if i was in the pug it would be 60ish tho it would feel faster so u think it is:p

Old thread i know but i was bored at work and looking through so thought i would add my comments.

I had a 106 Gti 6 years ago and had it for 3years and loved every min of it, it handled so so well. Was a real drivers car that you had to drive hard. I sold it and got myself an Astra GSI turbo which had much more power but i did miss the handling of the gti.

Ive sold the astra few months back due to running costs and just getting a house(I modded it 2 much) and was looking into getting another 106 gti but ended up with the ibiza cupra. Again not as good handling as the gti but its turbo so has much more friendly to mod and im very happy with the cupra

well, i got the ibiza, and got rid off it a couple of months later.

Tbh i think i got a rotter of an example, had to spend alot of money on it to get it working, and the handling was dire and the brakes where nothing shirt of dangerous even ater a full re-fit with seat parts including new fluid.

Very dissapointed, the power was brilliant (re-map, FMIC couple of other bits ~220 bhp) but the rest was totally uninspiring.

Sold it and got a clio 172, not a patch on it speed wise but a hell of alot more fun to drive.

Miss the Gti massively though :(

Cant believe the amount of you that are slaggin the cupra handling soo much. It aint that bad at all, you just gota know how to drive it properly an you'l be fine.

If you go into a corner at silly speed then you cant expect it to handle great can you, balance your drivng to suit the car and you'l be on a winner

well said. If cupra is set up with coilovers decent tyres etc then they handle awesome.
I can't believe my friend Ian_cupra how his handles at silly speeds on track

Personally, the one i had was on coilovers, front strut brace, poly bushes, pro-race 2's on with toyo's then later avon tyres.

The coilovers were stupidly over-sprung i hadn't heard of the manufacturer, made the car far to nervous to give you any confidence whatsoever, on a lovely smooth race track they'd have worked well.

I imagine with a decent set of coilies would have made a big improvement, but after spending best part of 2k getting everything working, i wasn't willing to spend about ~£700 getting a good setup, and i think thats the point more than anything it needed money spending on it to get it handling really well.
