right, i had my timing chain replaced yesterday and this morning it was idling pretty rough(seems to missfire every so often), took it back to the mechanic and he says its either the spark plugs, a coil pack on its way out or the idle control valve and not a timing problem. Can anyone tell me if this is plausible or does it sound like a timing problem?

cheers Neal

yes, what he says is probably correct but depending on the state of play when you gave him the car depends on what it could be

was the car running or be it badly when you took it in or had the chain jumped so much that it wouldn't start

if the engine was running rough when you took it in and he quoted you to correct it, he may be persuaded to make it run correctly without any extra money

if the engine was not running when you took it in it may have bent valves and will need lots more work/money :headhurt:

the car was fine when i took it in, i had the chain done so i wouldnt get the dreaded tensioner fault. this has occured after the new chain kit was installed, the mechanic said its just coincidental, does this sound right?

ahh, ok so no bent valves then, at the end of the day if you take your car in and it's running fine and you get it back with a misfire you should get the garage to sort it for free

as said it's probably a coil pack (£40) and about 60 seconds to fit but personally I wouldn't be paying for it mate

as you say, a coincidence that he takes a chance that he needs to pay for out of some of his high profit margin

yeah true, im gonna change the spark plugs tonight and see if its them, if not ill take it back to where i bought it as its still under warrenty, either way it'll get fixed for free. as long as it doesnt sound like a timing problem which is what i was worried about. cheers
