i would have assumed that you have just bought the car and have not really used any seat or vw this new.

its a safety feature to prevent unwanted entry from the other doors .
my march 2001 seat toledo1.8se did not have that feature but my VW BORA OCT 2001 and my now OCT 2003 toledo have that feature.

i stand to be corrected but i think vag.com can be used to change it to the mode you have just mentioned.
but like i said in my previous reply its a safety feature that comes in handy.
there was a couple of occasions when this feature came in handy in central London when strange drunkheads have tried to open my door assuming i was their Taxi.
Think carefully before you make this move.
