Sorry if this is a stupid question but can the charcoal filter just be removed without causing problems? Believe it's just there to help with emissions?
Have a mate with a MK3 Golf VR6 who removed his without any problems
Removed the N249 valve etc and think I've got a bit mad with removing bits now
Changing all the hoses and just wondered if the filter was really needed?
Its there to prevent having to allow the fuel tank vapour to escape to the atmosphere when the car is not running. Its collected in this system and cycled through the intake manifold to be burned by the engine. Very environmentally friendly and no benefit to be had by removing it.

Yep, plus also if you leave the pipe from the tank open so the fuel vapour vents you have an increased risk of explosion, if you close them off then your fuel system wont operate properly as you will have a large vacuum being induced in your fuel tank and run a very high risk of actually damaging your fuel tank.
