i did sday a few days ago that it was the thermostat housing!lol and the thernostat was broken aswell so changed them both. And if the car is running hot while stationary and cool when running that will be the cause of the header tank not being the right level.ie loosing water frm ur thermostat housing.

if your using that much coolant, and can't see any leaks. its most proberly the head gasket or even a cracked cylinder head

co-incodence? got a head gasked to be replaced in next few days, as i know for a fact its on its way out, just want to get it done before head will need skimming, after all no lose in performance, still can beat a 2.0 16v vectra redtop in a 1.6 8v lol :funk:

forgot to check it like, but got a replacement thermostat will do it tomorrow if good weather?! hope it works lol

One thing

The thermostat not opening does not stop the engine getting warm, it does the opposite, it ensures the engine gets very very hot as the water pump only pumps the water around the engine, it stops the water circulating from the engine through the coolant system ie hoses, radiator and also as mentioned the cab heating system via the heater matrix.

A water pump going usually means a whining noise and a big loss of coolant which you should be able to see. If its only the thermostat what you could do is refill the coolant system, start the car and feel the hose from the thermostat to the radiator to check if it starts getting really warm which should happen when everything is normal, if it doesnt then it suggests thermostat.

If you can take the thermostat out, to check it just get a jug of hot water, dip it in the water you should see the wax part shrink if its okay.

Incidentally just read the bit where it says it is the thermostat, oh crap lol

Gates cambelt kit is about £40 ish from memory, water pumps can vary, my local garage got a new one for £25, with, and this is important, a metal impeller, however i have no idea how they got it so cheap. Think they are usually about £50 or so.

As for labour, I think its about an hour and a half for all that.

If its an 8v with the dizzy at the front and not mounted on the side then make sure they know there may also be a timing mark on the dizzy pulley to line up with the crank pulley.

right then! got my new water pump and cambelt kit fitted friday.... turned the engine on and still water pissing out.... turns out it was the water pump housing or a hose coming off it made of plastic thats prone to splitting. which meant cambelt and water pump back off to fit this stupid hose that only cost 9quid from the main dealers. but finally i have my car working again!!!
