Cruise Control Intermittent Fault

After taking in for a Service have mentioned about the Intermittent Cruise Control Fault, thats been hanging around for a couple of year now.
Basically, cruise works 99% of the time but the odd 1% it fails to recognise that you have selected it via the switch on the end of the stalk and no matter how many times you try the only way to get it to work again is by stopping the car switching the engine off and restarting your Journey.
The Deaaler told me they have ordered a part, I asked 'what part' they told me 'a switch'.!

Question is - Is it the 'Switch' that causes this to happen or something else.

I mentioned to service chap that I knew it was a common problem with being a member of Seat Cupra.net , but as always they just look at you blankly.!!!!

Some advice from anyone who knows exactly what needs to be done to get this rectified will undoubtebly help when I push this one through to the dealer to fix under warranty

Thanks

Hello cadman, just had mine done, told them it was a well documented problem and a safety concern, though on mine (I swear) on a couple of occasions i pressed to go slower and it went faster, it also failed to engage at all sometimes. Pretty sure it was a complete new stalk, been 100% problem free since, seemed to get hold of the stalk in no time at all.

@cadman2k

It's most likely that the contacts on the board that's fitted within the stalk loose their connection ... either dust & dirt or they are a little "worn out" and have to be slightly readjusted.

The first DIY experiences are reported in our board ... and it was a success.

While the instruction was first published on the Italian forum AFAIK, it swapped to the French autotitre, where I found it and translated the few comments for our community.

Maybe, the articles and the pictures included will help you as well ... and the two other boards don't mind me publishing their pages here:

Ive had mine replaced and the new one has failed to engage a few times too. I just put the car into neutral and restart while coasting along and that works. Not ideal so I will harass the stealers again soon....

Cruise control problems - ALTEA 2.0FSi

Hi

Glad to see that the cruise control fault on my SEAT ALTEA 2.0FSi SPORT is not just unique to my car!

My dealer has said that the problem is probably the "column stalk" and has ordered a new one, plus a clutch switch just in case that is the cause.

My experiences are the same as others, cruise control works most of the time OK, then disengages. Restarting the engine works, though the system often disengages again without any use of brake/clutch or any other use of the controls.

Car less than 2 years old, already had a new CD player fitted after 1 year (another common problem I believe-switching on/off without human intervention!).

Shame to have these problems as I really do love this car. Comfortable, smooth and effortless to drive, only problem is keeping to the motorway speed limits - especially without cruise control. LOL! :)

I will report back next week after the dealer visit to see if it has been fixed.

Thanks for all your other posts about this issue.

Hi all
Dealer replaced the cruise control "column stalk" last Thursday (24th May?) and the cruise control has worked OK since. Just completed a 260 round trip without any problems.

Dealer took 1.5 hrs to do the repair under warranty. As mentioned on another thread, after my faulty CD/radio was replaced, then my cruise control, the service manager said the only other thing likely to go wrong is the climatronic aircon - due to the wiring chafing under the dash!!!!

Symptoms are aircon being erratic (blowing hot and/or cold instead of keeping even temperature).

Requires dash removal to fix wiring damage and involves a hefty labour bill. He did say he hasn't had very many - not so common as faulty radios or cruise control! Just keeping my fingers crossed - out of warranty end of January 2008 :-(

As suggested I've cleaned the contacts in the cruise-control stalk (with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton bud) and it's all working again!

As it was so easy to do I've also cleaned the contacts on the wash/wipe sensitivity switch to see if that helps the lack of sensitivity. Just waiting for it to rain again!

Thanks guys!
