Crushing Cupra Depreciation?

i read last week that the 350z is one of the cars NOT to buy due to depreciation, running (ruining!!) costs, tax etc
I saw that also, it was in Auto Express. While it's true that the Nissan 350Z has more money to loose, the PCP quote I have here for the car doe slook favourably on it. they have put their neck out a bit, and the 3 year value at £13,850 (With 45K on the clock @ 3 years). Your thinking, "but wait, thats over 55% depreciation!".

And indeed it would be, but the steeler is prepared to slice £3K off the cost of the car just to shift one! My P/X value didn't budge however - They still can't find a buyer. With regards to the other costs associated with it, this may not be to everyone's view, but the road tax is £400, rising to £750 in 2010. It's not the end of the world, as that is by far one of the lower costs associated with owning a 350Z.

Fuel wll be slightly higher, and the 80 litre tank of Super Unleaded will raise an eyebrow at the pumps, but in an MPG point of view, it's only some £10 per week more to fuel over the Cupra. Servicing is also every 20,000 - Just like all other Nissans (GT-R excluded!).

To the poster who asked for my cars age, it's a 2008/57 plate, registered new 02/01/08. It's currently got 17,011 miles on the clock, and a raft of modifications. Local Seat dealers have some delivery mileage only Cupra's for <£14K. Totally shocking - why buy new for £20K

I think, as much as I can afford to buy and run the actual car itself, the massive hit the Cupra's took caught me off guard. I think I will have to just "wait and see", and review things agan next summer. The 350Z will be replaced with the all new 370Z, so i'll still be able to get my hands on a muscular V6 in one way or another (I would just much rather prefer it if we had a Cupra R32!!!).

By the way, the Nissan will be taking a bigger 2nd hand hit than the Cupra, and you will find that with your Cupra being tuned, it will be faster than the 350Z too.
Yeah, the Nissan is slower - thats immediatly obvious as soon as you put your foot down in it. Leon shoots off leaps and bounds, where as the Z just makes a sweet noise and will be happy just to follow from behind. It's worth noting that, in a traffic light duel, the Leon is only just faster.

It's not all about the acceleration with the Z though - it goes sideways very, very well, and corners like it's on rails. It takes longer to get from A to B, because your hunting down all the B roads, but when you arrive at your destination with the Nissan, you have a grin on your face like a Chesshire Cat ;)

Apart from the road tax and mpg issue, things will come back I reckon. Our md is running around buying RX8's, 350Z's, Hyundai Coupes, Landcruisers etc etc They are soooooo cheap as no-one else wants them. Brave or stupid, time will tell - plus, he has just taken delivery of a new Ferrari ordered 2 years ago lol I honestly think people are panicking and certain bargains can be had, just hard to judge for sure . . . . . . . . I'd buy a Cupra tomorrow for £9k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My 08 FR TDI will still fetch £14k bottom book!!!!!!!!!!

Your MD is doing very well - esp buyng all those types of cars. Does he want a Cupra?

I do hope market conditions recover, but how long is it likley to take? I measn, we see trillions being wiped off stocks and shares, house prices tumble, and credit is nigh on impossible to obtain. I can't see no quick fix for the situation the UK is in atm...

A year old cupra going by whatcar is worth 12k in normal conditions. The fact you are being offered alot less isnt surprising.

Fact of the matter is buying new is never clever at all, in the first year you are quaranteed to loose a bundle. Just be glad you didnt buy a 335i, you should see the depreciation on those, in the first year ;)

350z depreciation isnt exactly good either, especially with the 370z on the horizon.

But mostly buying new and only keeping the car for a year or so is just like throwing money away. But if you must sell, if you can hang on till march I will give you 9k myself :D

The "book" has nothing to do with what you are offered, so pointless talking about book prices. Market forces dictate what you are offered, and at the moment the matket is tits up .. Hence why when my car had a "book" price of 11,800 - 14,200 trade in I was offered 10-12.5 for it. Have a look at what they are selling for on Autotrader and knock off 15-20% for a trade in ...

On another note, is the Leon's guarenteed future value worth the paper it's printed on when she's 3 years old? At this rate, it will sail way past it by 18 months!
I think it depends on the PCP you have. IANACarSalesman, but if it has a 'guaranteed' MFV, then if its actual value is less, I think you can just drive it to the dealers at the end of the term and hand the keys over with nothing more to pay. Going back a few years, I had such a scheme through a dealer on a Corsa. At the end of three years, the trade-in prices I was being offered were less than the Guaranteed MFV, so I did just that.

Some PCPs are akin to unsecured personal loans. They are just deferring a large part of the capital repayment to the end of the term. In theory, the trade-in you're offered should be enough to pay off the outstanding amount. However, if it isn't, it still has to be repaid.

The prices of cars are like everything else in a capitalist society; they're worth what someone is willing to pay for them. And at the moment, that's very little. The best advice I can offer is stick with your existing car until the end of the term. Who knows what the financial situation may be by then? And have a good read of your contract.

if you dont have to sell then dont.

its a buyers market for sure at the moment, but unfortunately you also have something to sell.
its the same with all walks of life, shares, isa's, houses, ebay!! if your a buyer theres good savings to be had, however, if your a seller..... you have to be prepared to take the hit.

I see the current situation as an opportunity. My FR TDI will be totally paid in 1 year. Come spring time I may be looking something quicker and it may be a good opportunity to pick up something fresh, quick and cheap as a 2nd car..

Cost to change is the real figure to look at tbh , I have just lost £5,500 on my FR, but the car I bought has shed 11k , in under a year ! Swings & roundabouts , don`t look at what you are losing as it`s all just figures at the end of the day, the spondoolies you hand over is the important bit ..

yeah thats the sensible approach but its still a killer to see your £10k trade-in parked outside the dealer all stickered up at £13k [:@] thats why i stick to parts - i hate car salesmen, even our own  i get my own back by charging parts to prep jobs at a fortune

Woah, lets look at cost to change into the 350Z. Leon owes 14K on it's PCP, and best offer for it was scraping £9K. Nissan costs £25K, and they want 15% deposit. Thats £3750. I'll need to bridg the gap for the Leon, and thats approx £5K. Total cost is £8750 approx.

Thats not great tbh. I've dug out the Leon's PCP document too, the mininum guarenteed value at 3 years old was set at £8296.17. Lol, it's almost there already at 9 months old!!! they have to agree this value at 3 years right? (Assuming car's not over mileage or in bad condition).
