Cupra & a baby

Hey all,

I’ve currently got a 5 door 2016 Leon Cupra black edition & I’m expecting my first child in May. I always said I wouldn’t get rid of my Cupra & would just buy it when the pcp ends but now I’m wondering do I need to change it for something bigger? My car is the one that’s used the most as I’m a shift worker & have more days off than my partner, the logical part of me says just keep it. It’s usually just me & our doggo that’s in my car most of the time.

Just wondering what other peoples experiences of a baby in a cupra are

Keep it, enough space for a baby and all their equipment. If you need more space, for example a family holiday, get a roof box. Your PCP end price will give you a 'cheap' car given the current high price car market.

Well I’ve got an R ST so not sure if it helps you being an estate, bit there’s loads of room in the car on the back seats and the boot is big.

I think you’d be fine with a hatchback, but just make sure there’s room for your pushchair 😉

We’ve managed with a mk3 hatch, daughter is now 2 years old. It can be a bit of squeeze visiting family at Christmas and long weekends away, apart from those occasions it’s more than enough room. A roof box is a good shout for those longer trips away @MattN

I hadn’t even thought about a roof box. Thanks guys, it drives so smoothly I’d have been sad to get rid of my car!

Thanks for your replies 😬

I think that all these companies that have designed "must have" pram/pushchairs should have told their potential buyers that they are mainly for use not including "going away" in a modern hatch/car like the Golf/Leon!

My daughter and her man are going through this right now, originally she was aiming to buy a new Cupra ST because, she said, it had 4WD which would come in useful in winter if her parents, my wife and I needed any assistance - if she had told me they were planning to start a family, I might have agreed with her instead of suggesting that she bought an unused pre-reg'd Leon Cupra hatch at a very attractive price!

Back in the day, ie 1982, we bought a new Ford Escort 1.6 Ghia 5 door, and that worked for almost 3 years including 2 week holidays down to Cornwell/Devon/Dorset etc from central Scotland - followed by same thing when daughter number two arrived in 1985 by which time we had moved on to running a Ford Orion 1.6 Ghia Injection.

I managed with a mk3 hatch

But the pram took up the entire boot 🤣 no room for nothing else. Not ideal.

I now have a small estate car 🤣

First of all - congratulations...
Really depends on what buggy/pushchair you have/get - some are huge, some more compact. Suggest trying some to see how they fit in the boot - i'm sure it will fit, just depends on how much other stuff you want to carry?
Also getting the baby seat in the back with baby can be a little fiddly due to the lower roof - compared to an SUV or MPV.

I've got two kids and we've been through newborn to primary school stage with both a MK2 Leon and a cupra ST with no issues.
In fact the wife has had a Mazda 3 hatch all the way and neither of us have needed to consider anything bigger when two car seats fit perfectly fine on the rear bench

We had a britax buggy for baby stages with the car seat moving between the isofix mount and the buggy base for when the kids were still babies, folded up and into the boot.

When my daughter arrived, no chance would we of made it work with my 280 hatch. So bought a 300 ST and it was problem solved. The two main issues we had was a pram/buggy filled the boot and the passenger seat was so far forward due to the car seat it was uncomfortable.

People say they made it work with a hatchback, id love to know how...

It's cheaper to buy the right car seat and a buggy to fit the car than it is to change the car :D

When Mothercare and kiddicare were still around, we had them check the different brands / designs to fit and they knew which ones were already a no-go as they had seen countless to-be parents before with the same models of car.

I have the ST now due to the growing request for bikes which started to prove problematic to fit in the boots of my previous vehicles.

Cosatto car seat and pram. Pram fits in the boot no problem with room to spare. Just lucked out on seat and pram combo that was a decent price and didn’t take up tons of space.

I used to fit our two 'toddler' bikes in the boot of my ST no problem - but now we have moved upto 16" wheel kids MTBs no way they fit in the boot, amazing how much bigger in volume they are, it was a seat down job when I collected them (of ebay - soooo much cheaper than new!) so will need to go on the roof if we are out as a family!

Plus we had a dog to fit in, so we just bit the bullet and got an estate. With the SUV craze you cant beat an estate in doing the family grunt work.

I skipped the part where we bought an Ateca I found it sole destroying, gave it to my wife and bought a car I enjoy driving :ROFLMAO:

I used a mk1 leon cupra with a newborn and a 6yo. There's more space in the mk3 so shouldn't be a problem unless the boot is a weird shape

I have a four year old and find the Cupra is more than big enough. He has plenty of leg room with his car seat in and the boot is more than big enough to fit a pram if needed with space to spare

That brings back some very happy memories - I passed my driving test in a Y reg 1983 Escort 1.6 Ghia! Elliott School of Motoring.......and weird that 20 years later, (yesterday by date) I met and married my wife, who's maiden name was Elliott too, even spelt the same way
