Quick bit of maths for you mate:

1.6 leon = £2K
LCR engine = £1500 maybe I honetly don't know
insurance for 1.6 modified with new engine from LCR = £3K probably
Insurance for standard LR = £2K as you quoted.

It's really not worth the hassel to do the swap, you could get an LC for 4K ish now. Seriously think you should consider selling the 1.6 private, don't trade it in as you will lose money and buy an LC till the insurance on the LCR goes down.

Do not modify the Leon 1.6S.

As an owner, these cars have more value as a 1.6 than in any modified racing form - simply because the majority of 1.6S owners are people who use the car as a little town-runabout cheap golf-alternative.

Your insurance company probably won't insure you at all with that engine - so you don't need to worry about the cost of it - they'll take one look at the power you're putting into the car's engine, and the lack of anything else to compensate for this - and laugh at you

Actually I can understand your predicament since I asked my insurance company (Adrian Flux) and they would charge me £1000 per year LESS if I converted my 1.6 than if I went out and bought a Cupra (group 18). It would only cost me an additional £300 per year to put a 1.8T in the S but a cupra would be £1350 extra per year.
Leon S = group 6
Leon Cupra = group 18
Its tempting, but after brakes, suspension, gearbox, electrics and all that you end up with a car that is hard to sell, VIN nos dont match and it will cost you £4000 at least. Not to mention all of the electrical goodies that come with a Cupra like climate control and lekky windaz in the back etc.
I must say that the replies to your post are mostly right, you are better off waiting for your insurance to drop and then buying a cupra...

I think some of you guys are missing the point here..

This joker doesn't plan on telling the insurance company about the mod...At least thats how i read it. In essence he will continue with the 1.6 insurance policy on a 210/225 lump..

If your still reading mate, forget it...If you hit someone in your motor, you'll be paying for it for the rest of your life (after your jail term that is)..Its not worth the risk!
And not the type of thing members here condone..

Snakebite15 , you`ve done a few mods to your 1.6 Leon , did that have any effect on insurance ? When I put 18`s on my LC I was quoted another £120 , and I`m 36 with full no claims . If u have`nt declared anything on your insurance you can kiss goodbye to any chance of claiming if there is damage done to your car . I`m not slagging u off or taking the p*** , but if you`re not honest with your insurance it`ll cost u in the end.

Well I dont have any points but I stupidly have a DD from 3 or 4 years ago, so am "high risk" (I swear i was barely over the limit).

But I was amazed when I found out I could save a fortune on my insurance by modding the 1.6 instead of buying a Cupra. You just have to go to an insurance company that specialises in modified motors.

Also remember that the prices I quoted are to be added to the £800 p/a that I am currently paying to be insured on my 1.6 (with all of my mods declared, even the fabia wiper etc).

We are all getiing hung up on what the insurance will cost him extra, but it doesn't matter as he seems to think he could get away with putting the 1.8 engine in, but not declaring it so he still pays for the 1.6.
And he says he's not stupid! Must think everyone else is then?
Thing that makes me laugh is he says he can't afford to buy the Cupra due to insurance costs, but he can afford to Buy the engine, get it and the car to a garage, pay for a good few days work at high labour charges, and then pay someone to sort out the inevitable problems from trying to get a 1.8 20v to run with a 1.6 ECU.
Remind again.... are you serious about not being stupid?
Look on the bright side, if you'd valued your licence and drove properly with out collecting points (you don't get a Plasma telly for getting 12 you know?) you'd be able to afford one with a company like Greenlight.
Nevermind, at least the rest of us are safer without you behind the wheel of such a quick car.

BUT

If PC Plod opens your bonet or worse you have an accident yes you can kiss goodbye to a lot of cash and life!

OK, so I was wrong about the whole insurance group thing, the Cupra is 16 and the LCR 17, but it's still a big jump from group 6!

i dont think this guy is gonna say anything else, hes clearly been proven a fool. not sayin owt to the insurance n swappin the engine is like walking into to prison with a gun and asking for a room looking onto the court yard. I've got a 1.8 20se, and ive only done little bits to it and im payin £1000 with 2 years no claims - im stuck with norich union cos of the young drivers thing. the engine in mine is pretty much a golf GTI engine and its fast enough for now, id love a cupra R but at the mo its outta my league. my car is insurance group nine.
